Songs From Exotic haflidi hallgrimsson s and Judith Weir s short cycles are both rooted (but not potbound) in folk music both demonstrate that it can be vitally fruitful, http://www.songsforconnoisseurs.org.uk/songs from the exotic 02.htm
Extractions: "Expert performances throughout" Gramophone Reviews: BBC Music Magazine, June 1995: " Songs from the Exotic , comprising nine new works for voice, clarinet and piano played by TAPESTRY, is an outstanding disc in every way. The performances are exemplary and the stylistic range of music is wide and need not be feared by those wary of contemporary music. Andrew Sparling plays on both C and bass clarinets in addition to the standard B flat instrument and his handling of ethnic-sounding quartertones in Finnissy's Beuk o' Newcassel Sangs is remarkable.

Hallgrmsson began his musical life as a cellist , spending twenty years playing with orchestras in Iceland, England and Scotland . A lifelong interest in writing music, and studies with Peter Maxwell Davies and Alan Bush , led him to give up his performing career in 1983 to compose full time. Unsurprisingly, works for strings are central to his catalogue, most of his large ensemble works being for strings only. Often inspired by visual art (Hallgrmsson is himself an accomplished painter), his unique language is both eerie and paradoxical; with repeated listening, the seemingly simple can unveil mysterious depths, and the impenetrable can reveal itself with unexpected clarity. 1958-67 - studied cello in Reykjavk Rome and London 1968-74 - private studies in composition with Peter Maxwell Davies and Alan Bush Nordic Council Music Prize for Poemi 1994 - premiere of Rimaat the opening of the Winter Olympic Games 1997-8 - Composer-in-Residence with the Icelandic Symphony Orchestra 2002-6 - fellowship from NESTA to work on two chamber operas.

CREDO Composer and critic Calum MacDonald praises haflidi Hallgrímssons haflidi Hallgrímsson´s Passía was referred to as a Passion for our times in the http://www.credo.is/web/
Extractions: Icelandic version One could hardly ask for a better review than the one about Passía in the May issue of BBC Music Magazine, the best-selling magazine about classical music in the world. Composer and critic Calum MacDonald praises Haflidi Hallgrímssons composition highly and refers to it as a modern religious masterpiece. He enthusiastically recommends the CD and gives both performance and sound five stars. Read and be convinced! Passía has been enthusiastically praised in a review in the classical channel of the Bavarian state radio (Bayerischer Rundfunk). Ursula Adamski-Störmer was delighted to have found modern music that speaks both to the mind and the heart. She said: Passía is a gripping, contemplative composition, that combines many stylistic and technical features of contemporary music to make a strikingly dramatic and large-scale passion. She also praised the musicians for their musical precision and interpretative intensity and predicted that Passía would be heard in ambitious passion concerts in the future. The review can be found here (in German).
