Polish Culture: HENRYK MIKOLAJ GORECKI Composer, born 6 December 1933 in Czernica, near Rybnik. http://www.culture.pl/en/culture/artykuly/os_gorecki_henryk_mikolaj
Extractions: He began his formal study of music in 1952 in the pedagogical department of the Music High School in Rybnik. Later, he studied composition under Boleslaw Szabelski, at the State Academy of Music (known today as the Academy of Music) in Katowice (1955-60). On 27 February 1958, a concert of Gorecki's own work took place, the first such concert devoted to the work of just one student in the history of that school. Five pieces were performed for the first time at that concert, including the first version of SONGS OF JOY AND RHYTHM, OP. 7 PIESNI O RADOSCI I RYTMIE OP. 7 ) for two pianos and chamber orchestra (1956) and CONCERTO FOR FIVE INSTRUMENTS AND STRING QUARTET, OP. 11 That same year, he debuted at the "WARSAW AUTUMN" (WARSZAWSKA JESIEN) INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL OF CONTEMPORARY MUSIC , where his EPITAFIUM, OP. 12 , for mixed choir and instrumental ensemble (1958) was performed. Thanks to that work, Gorecki became known as one of Poland's most radical avantgarde composers. In 1960, he graduated from the Academy with honours. That same year, his MONOLOGHI, OP. 16
Extractions: 2007-04-13 Michal Kubicki Henryk Mikolaj Gorecki It was the Third Symphony â subtitled The Symphony of Sorrowful Songs â that made Gorecki world famous in the early Nineties. Written in the late Seventies, it remained obscure until a Nonesuch recording that sold over a million copies, rose high on the pop charts and was used on film soundtracks. Since that commercial success, Gorecki has written several choral works but, as one critic put it, nothing that said to the world: Iâm still here! In actual fact, however, back in 1995 he composed a major piece but it was only ten years later that he sent the score to the Kronos Quartet, which commissioned the piece and for which it was written. It is the Third Quartet. The dedication reads: âTo the Kronos Quartet, which has waited patiently for this quartet for so many yearsâ. Premiered in Poland at the end of 2005, it has just been released by Nonesuch. Adrian Thomas, British musicologist and author of a study on Gorecki, attended the workâs first performance. "Itâs the longest of the three string quartets. Itâs about an hour long, roughly the same length as the famous Third Symphony and like the Third Symphony which is all slow music the Third String Quartet is very slow. The middle of the five movements is a faster one but at the same time we have the feeling that it wants to be a slow movement. Thereâs something about the atmosphere of this piece which is very reflective, very internalized and often very melancholic".

Shortly afterwards he gained his first significant international success as a composer, winning 1st prize at the 1961 Biennial Festival of Youth in Paris with his Symphony No. 1. moto perpetuo , then by the start of the following decade it had been supplemented by features of post-Webern expressionism - his technical style contains selective usage of serial technique ("free serial technique"). Genesis I-III (1962-63) and La Musiquette I-IV (1967-70), both of which were created for selected, mostly chamber instrumentations. As much as Genesis is a continuation of the Polish "speciality" of those days, known as "sonorous expressionism, a considerable limitation of sound material follows in Les Musiquettes . Henryk Gorecki Interview . . . . . Composer henrykmikolaj Górecki. A conversation with Bruce Duffie. The Polish composer henryk Górecki labored for many years with only local fame, http://www.bruceduffie.com/gorecki.html
Extractions: Bruce Duffie : Thank you so much for taking time from your busy schedule. : It's a shame the day doesn't have more hours. BD : Do you always feel that you would want more hours to write? HG : When I write, I don't receive anyone. I don't take calls. I have only peace and quiet. I have a one-track mind. BD : Do all your ideas come from you mind, or are there times when the pencil controls your hand across the page? HG : I don't think there's ever been a hand that writes or a pen that writes by itself. Even the great Bach or the great Mozart, although I'm not sure which one is the greatest, the hand doesn't do it itself. It does what the head tells it. BD : Well, are you creating the ideas or are you discovering the ideas? HG : I don't know. I write. I sit. I work hard. I work. It's hard work. Really. BD : Too hard? HG : Very. Very hard. It's very hard. It's not an easy task at all. BD : Everyone asks you for new pieces of music. How do you decide which commissions you'll accept and which commissions you'll turn aside? HG : I've turned down a lot of commissions, and I continue to turn them down. I write only what I want. For example, there are some things you can't turn down, like the Kronos Quartet. They asked me to write a quartet so I'm writing a quartet. Of course, they didn't ask for a symphony. I've had many commissions for an opera, and also several for ballet. So far, I've never written a ballet nor an opera.

Extractions: For all those who haven't been able yet to get into Górecki's world: It's that versatile, you can't judge from one piece to others. There are in fact some works I don't like that much, but there's really nothing like the 3rd symphony. As - like it's usual in classical music - there are a huge amount of recordings and CDs of the 3rd symphony (I for one got 3 versions on CD) - I find this recording provided here best. Consisting of three parts, this minimal-music-adjoining masterpiece surely will lower your bloodpressure to critical levels.
