El lugar destacado que ocupa en la historia de la música radica sobre todo en la reforma que llevó a cabo del género operístico, precursora que propugnaría Richard Wagner un siglo después. Hijo de un guarda forestal, en 1736 el príncipe Lobkowitz tomó a Gluck a su servicio en Viena, y un año después el príncipe Melzi se lo llevó consigo a Milán, en Italia, donde recibió lecciones de composición de Giovanni Battista Sammartini. Fruto de estas enseñanzas fue su primera ópera seria, Artajerjes , compuesta en 1741 según el estilo italiano entonces imperante. Dado el éxito alcanzado, Gluck dio a la escena nuevos títulos, entre ellos Il Tigrane La clemencia de Tito (1752) y La Cinesi (1754). Ninguno de ellos dejaba entrever las innovaciones que lo harían célebre, antes al contrario: se adaptaban plenamente a las convenciones formales de la ópera seria. Determinante en su posterior evolución fue el conocimiento de la ópera francesa, la tragédie-lyrique de Lully y Rameau, que tuvo oportunidad de estudiar en Viena. Influido por ella, dio a conocer en 1762 la obra que inauguraba su reforma
