He was one of the most influential musicians of his time, and represents the culmination of the style of the Venetian School , at the time of the shift from Renaissance to Baroque idioms. Gabrieli was most likely born in Venice . He was one of five children, and his father came from the town of Carnia to Venice shortly before Giovanni's birth. While not much is known about Giovanni's early life, he probably studied with his uncle, the composer Andrea Gabrieli ; he may indeed have been brought up by him, as is implied in some of his later writing. He also went to Munich to study with the renowned Orlando de Lassus at the court of Duke Albrecht V ; most likely he stayed there until about By he had returned to Venice, where he became principal organist at Saint Mark's Basilica in , after Claudio Merulo left the post; following his uncle's death the following year he took the post of principal composer as well. Also after his uncle's death he began editing much of the older man's music, which would otherwise have been lost; Andrea evidently had had little inclination to publish his own music, but Giovanni's opinion of it was sufficiently high that he devoted much of his own time to compiling and editing it for publication.

No one is certain when or where Giovanni Gabrieli was born. An entry in Venetian necrology from 1612 records Gabrieli's age as either fifty-six or fifty-eight years old at the time of his death in 1612. This leads most scholars to believe that he was born between 1554 and 1557. He was one of three sons (Giovanni, Domencio and Matteo) and two daughters (Angela and Marina) born to Piero di Fais ('called Gabrieli'). Little information is available about Giovanni Gabrieli’s family circle and financial situation, other than that his father probably died before 1572. It is possible that Giovanni was brought up by his uncle, Andrea Gabrieli, who was also a composer and organist. There is very little information available about the relationship between Andrea and Giovanni Gabrieli, although a few sources indicate that the relationship between the two men may have been almost filial. Giovanni went to Munich around 1575 to study under Orlande de Lassus at the court of Duke Albrecht V, like Andrea had. Munich is where Giovanni produced his first madrigals to be published. He probably left this employment in the early 1580's as part of the exodus of musicians after the death of Duke Albrecht in the 1579.
