JSTOR Gerald Finzi THE MUSICAL TIMES gerald finzi By JOHN RUSSELL ONCE, as I came into gerald finzi s music room, I found him reading a poem of Henry Vaughan. http://links.jstor.org/sici?sici=0027-4666(195612)97:1366<630:GF>2.0.CO;2-I
Extractions: Proms Saturday Matinee 2 Allegro vigoroso Adagio ma senza rigore Rondo:Allegro giocoso Finzi is best known for his vocal music, in particular for Dies natalis and his Hardy songs; and he is sometimes considered a small-scale composer, if not a miniaturist. But he is a bigger and more diverse figure than that. About a third of his output is instrumental, and he published three concerto-style works. Except for its slow movement, he scrapped an early Violin Concerto (though it was performed at the Queens Hall in 1928). In that same year he also composed a highly individual Grand Fantasia for piano and orchestra, though he did not add the slightly Waltonian Toccata to it until 1953. But his concertos for clarinet (19489) and for cello (19515) are big, threemovement works, cast in fairly traditional moulds.

Extractions: Finzi has good friends: few finer than Iain Burnside, the urbane host-accompanist of BBC Radio 3's Tuesday afternoon programme Voices , and Jim Page, the lynchpin of the Housman Society, who is also Vice Chairman of The Finzi Friends: a real and living body, which supports and promotes the work of not just its own composer whose gift for turning fragile song surely partly stems from tragedy in boyhood (Gerald Finzi lost three brothers in six years between 1912 and 1918); but of English Song as a whole. It is English Song, in all its various manifestations the celebratory, the tragic, the nostalgic, the comic that was celebrated at both the last two full weekends hosted by the Finzi Friends at the Ludlow Assembly rooms, just opposite the church where the most widely set of all English poets, A E Housman, lies buried. This was where we gathered last summer, a long time ago now, but the memories are still amazingly fresh. Constructing a programme of Song is, as Burnside points out, 'like planting a garden: texture, colour, contrast, echoes.' One might add roots, tendrils, branches: for here is a progression that leads straight from Purcell and Arne (neither featured) through Parry and Elgar to one of the finest lyricists composing today albeit in a different, Berg-informed vein, much as Elgar was Wagner-informed: Hugh Wood, whose

Extractions: GERALD FINZI (1901 - 1956) His Life and Style Finzi came from a well-off family, and he represents a generation that grew up during World War One and reached middle age in World War Two. His music was influenced by Elgar, Vaughan Williams, and other British composers of the earlier generation. The majority of his music is vocal, perhaps because he had a wide knowledge of English poetry and enjoyed it greatly. However, he is best known today for his clarinet concerto from the late 1940s. 50 and died a few years later. Yet, melancholy and intensity often lurk beneath a seemingly placid surface. Clarinet Concerto Indeed, it seemed to surge in popularity in the 1980s and 1990s, when quite a few recordings were made of the music. It is a masterpiece of the clarinet repertoire, worthy of standing beside the handful of other clarinet concerti including Mozart and Weber. It dates from the late 1940s. The work runs approximately 30 minutes, is cast in the usual three movements, and is scored for strings and solo clarinet. Within the smaller-scaled orchestration, Finzi pours highly personal and intense emotions that are resolved over the course of the work.

Abi Rhodes' Zigzag Wanderings: Not Just Any Old Immortality gerald finzi Intimations of Immortality/For St Cecelia John Gilchrist, Tenor Bournemouth Symphony Chorus and Orchestra cond. David Hill http://abi-rhodes.typepad.com/abi_rhodes_zigzag_wanderi/2006/07/not_just_any_ol.
Extractions: Based on Wordsworth's Ode 'Intimations of Immortality from Recollections of Early Childhood' it is a genuinely heart-rending example of the unsurpassable pathos which exists in many pieces of 20th Century English Music. I have been a fan of Finzi, Howells, Vaughan Williams etc for some 20 years now since being herded into this delightful flowering summer meadow by my good friend 'Harold' and I still fail to be unmoved on hearing such delights as 'Intimations', VW's 'The Lark Ascending' and Elgar's 'Nimrod'. Of course, televisual images created by the likes of Ken Russel have helped permanently cement the landscapes of interwar England into one's visual cortex and conjure idyllic images of a, no doubt, largely fictional Golden Age we would all love to inhabit. Oops - I'm rambling.. 'For St Cecilia' is quite a different sort of offering than 'Intimations', starting in a somewhat anthemic style and dramatic in a very different way. It settles back into a more poetic mode but never attains the gut-wrenching emotional levels of the former work. I question whether pairing the 2 pieces on the same disc is a such good idea. Although I'm normally all for maximising the available space and thus helping the pocket of the record buyer, on this occasion, I think 'Intimations' (given its approximate 40 minute length) is sublime enough to warrant issue on its own - just this once. It's the type of music that one needs a little time to recover from when it's finished.
