A big band composition I think is very good is Duke Ellingtons Happy Go Lucky Local of 1946; it is both wild and organized. This is how it begins. [ex. 1: 0:00-0:39] We hear shrieks, moans, growls, squeaks, rumblings, dissonanceand more! Yet through it all, there was also that steady beat; amid chaos, form is here. In his groundbreaking paper on Duke Ellington, Edward Green said: Ellingtons desire to see order in a disorderly world, without making less of the surprise and rough quality of things, is in many of his compositions, including the wonderful train pieces Daybreak Express and Happy Go Lucky Local. Happy Go Lucky Local does honor the noise and disorder of the world. There is no clearly identifiable theme until 3½ minutes have gone by. Yet, from the very beginning, we hear one repeated pattern after another. Early, Ellington on piano and Oscar Pettiford on bass play, an ostinato, a short repeated pattern, and we hear the train starting to move.

Extractions: Full Review There has been a debate for several years as to which musician was the most influential in the creation of jazz. The debate is a little silly because it can be argued that no one individual can hold that title. The most obvious "nominees", however, are Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington. While I certainly admire Mr. Armstrong and acknowledge his incredible contributions to the jazz world, my personal choice of the most important jazz figure in history is Duke Ellington. Ellington grew up in Washington D.C. in the early 20th Century. His father worked in the White House and the young Edward Kennedy Ellington never really saw poverty with his strong middle class upbringing. He received the nickname "Duke" in high school due to his extremely neat manner of dress and his excellent manners. He started his career in music as a teen and was influenced by a number of early jazz greats on the piano. His first big orchestra started in 1927 and played at the famous Cotton Club of Harlem. Ellington did not like the term "jazz" which is a variation of the music's original name "jass." "Jass" was considered by many to be a vulgar term for it was often the music played in houses of ill repute.

Extractions: He played with the Washingtonians at the Kentucky Club, New York (1923-7), then moved to the Cotton Club (1927-32) with an enlarged band under his leadership. He pioneered the 'jungle' style of big-band jazz and made over 200 recordings. In 1931 he experimented with extended composition in "Creole Rhapsody" followed by "Reminiscin in Tempo" and "Diminuendo and Crescendo in Blue." The band developed further (it now had 14 pieces) and toured in the USA and Europe (1933, 1939). Ellington's writing was based on the styles of individual band members and suffered from its changes of personnel in the mid-1940s. His extended compositions continued, for the concert hall ("Black, Brown and Beige," 1943) and later for LP records (a series of 'suites').
