Extractions: Ellington, Duke Duke Ellington (1899-1974) was an American jazz bandleader, composer, and pianist. He rates as one of the greatest figures in jazz and, according to many critics, its most significant composer. Edward Kennedy Ellington was born in Washington, D.C. He began playing piano at the age of 7 and made his professional debut at 17. He moved to New York City in 1923 as a member of Elmer Snowden's band, the Washingtonians. Ellington soon took over the band, which grew from 5 pieces to 12 pieces by 1931. From 1927 to 1932, the Ellington band was the house band at the Cotton Club in Harlem. There, they played a rhythmic, exotic sound called jungle music. Many of Ellington's key musicianssuch as saxophonists Johnny Hodges and Harry Carneyremained with him for several decades, contributing to the band's readily identifiable sound. Other important musicians were tenor saxophonists Ben Webster and Paul Gonsalves, trombonists Joe Nanton and Lawrence Brown, clarinetist Barney Bigard, bassist Jimmy Blanton, and trumpeters Rex Stewart, Clark Terry, Cootie Williams, and Ray Nance. Beginning in the 1940's, Ellington composed longer works, such as Black, Brown, and Beige (1943). During the 1960's, Ellington wrote several film scores and began composing sacred music.

In the year 1999, The Pulitzer Prize-Special Award was bestowed posthumously on Edward Kennedy "Duke" Ellington commemorating the centennial year of his birth, April 29, 1899; in recognition of his musical genius, which brought to the surface his sensitivity to art and beauty, for the principles of democracy-through the medium of jazz and popular music, made an indelible contribution to art and culture. By the time of his passing, and even before that, Ellington was viewed as one of the greatest of all composers and musicians. The French government honored him with the highest award, the Legion of Honor; the United States government bestowed upon him the highest civil honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom. The Duke was known to have entertained royalty, and, those whom abode in the more common idiom of life. By the end of his fifty-year entertainment span, Ellington had played over 20,000 performances-world wide....he was the Duke, the Duke of Ellington.

Extractions: Tuba Im Jahre 1979 entstanden in Berlin auf Initiative von Dorothe Hochberg die "Dorothe's Jazz Serenaders". Seit 1983 spielt die Band in der oben aufgeführten Besetzung Jazz der 20er Jahre. Erste öffentliche Auftritte fanden u.a. während der 80er Jahre im Club 18 des damaligen RIAS statt, weitere erfolgten in Jazzclubs wie z.B. in Buxtehude und Nienburg, auf der Berliner Bundesgartenschau, zum Berliner Jazztreff, zum Jazz Band Ball im Hertha-Domizil, währernd der Allgäuer Jazztage in Leutkirch, im Hüttenwerk Peitz (zu DDR-Zeiten eine Hochburg des Jazz), beim Dussmann JazzMarathon in der Friedrichstr., regelmäßig in Berliner Kirchengemeinden, gelegentlich auf Straßenfesten und in (Jazz-)Kneipen, während der 90er Jahre regelmäßig in der "Ewigen Lampe", seit 1999 jährlich zum Scheunenfest in Paretz, seit 2003 regelmäßig in der "Alten Pumpe". Ansonsten jazzt die Band zu privaten Festivitäten aller Art.
