His father played violin in a village band and encouraged his son to take violin lessons. At 14, Antonin was sent to Venice, Italy, to live with an uncle to learn the innkeeping trade, but he spent much of his time studying the violin, viola, piano, and organ with a local teacher. At the age of 16, he moved to Prague, Czechoslovakia, and entered the famous Organ School of Prague. To support his studies he played in local bands and small orchestras which performed in cafes in the city. After graduation from the organ school in 1862, Dvorak spent 11 years playing in the orchstra of the Czech National Opera. During these years he continued his studies of orchestral works and began composing. In 1873 (age 3) he became an organist at a chjrch and married Anna Cermakova. After he married, Dvorak began to take composing seriously. His first symphony was premiered in 1874 and won an award from the Austrian government. In 1875 he wrote an opera. Dvorak now began to compose works with Bohemian folk melodies, including a set of Slavonic dances for orchestra. The Slavonic Dances were performed throughout Europe and becaem extremely popular with audiences. Suddenly Dvorak was famous and his works were in great demand. In 1884 (age 43) he traveled to London to conduct his works. The trip was a success and several of his works were published by a British publisher. Now financially successful, he purchased a country villa in which to spend his summers.

It was drafted in New York, in which city Dvorak lived for a few years in the 1890s, and where he wrote the New World Symphony. This Humoresque quickly became immensely popular, and was heard in all kinds of places and arrangements, including the penny arcade. One day, about 1907, when he was an eight-year-old boy, George Gershwin was walking down a street near his home in New York when he heard this melody coming from a slot machine. He was transfixed, and thereafter always maintained that the experience of coming into contact with this music was the most important of all his early musical experiences. He studied with Antonin Liehmann and at the Prague Organ School (1857-9). A capable viola player, he joined the band that became the nucleus of the new Provisional Theatre orchestra, conducted from 1866 by Smetana . Private teaching and mainly composing occupied him from 1873. He won the Austrian State Stipendium three times (1874, 1876-7), gaining the attention of Brahms , who secured the publisher Simrock for some of his works in 1878.     Extractions: Antonin Dvorak (1841-1904) Dvorak was one of several composers from the Romantic era who let his cultural roots shine through his music. Although the structure of his music follows generally along classical lines, his rhythms and melodies seem to embody the folk traditions of his native Czechoslovakia and surrounding regions. He was born in the village of Nelahozeves near Prague where his father was a butcher. Although his early circumstances were relatively poor, he learned violin, viola, piano and organ at school. The young Dvorak was clearly very interested in music making and destined for a career in music. He later studied in Prague and there for a number of years he played viola in the Provisional Theatre Orchestra. This gave him some excellent practical experience not only in performing but in orchestral dynamics. The chief conductor of this orchestra was none other than Bedrich Smetana. Smetana was the founding father of the nationalist school of music in his country and Dvorak was to follow his example in this respect for the rest of his life. Among other composers to influence Dvorak was Wagner . Dvorak played in a concert of Wagner excerpts conducted by the composer himself, and this experience had a noticable impact on the direction that Dvorak was to take.     Extractions: Antonin Dvorak was born in Nelahozeves, Bohemia, in 1841, son of a butcher. Although his father intended him to learn the family trade, Dvorak showed early talent as a violinist. He was sent to Zlonice at the age of twelve for formal schooling, studying theory with Antonin Liehmann, as well as learning viola, organ, and piano. He studied German at Kamenice in 1855, and after returning to Zlonice to assist his family in the shop, he entered the Prague Organ School in 1857, graduating two years later. After a brief period in a band led by Karel Komsak, he became principal viola in the Prague Provisional Theatre Orchestra in 1862. He held this post for seven years, sometimes playing under the direction of the composer Smetana. He also earned money by giving music lessons, and it was while he was teaching the young actress Josefina Cermakova in 1865 that he composed the song cycle Cypress Trees. Consisting of 18 songs, it is a remarkable and often highly progressive work, perhaps inspired by his love for Josefina. He also wrote his First Symphony, subtitled 'The Bells of Zlonice', in the same year.

The composition of Quartets Nos. 13 and 14, in 1895, seems to have taken place over the same period. From the American period comes the G major Sonatina for violin and piano, its second movement sometimes known as Indian Lament. Of the four surviving piano trios the fourth, nick-named the Dumky because of its use of a Bohemian national dance-form, is the best known, closely rivalled in popularity by the third. Dvorák displayed unusual musical talent at an early age and learned to play the violin from the local schoolmaster. At age 16 he went to Prague to study organ and composition, supporting himself as a violist and piano teacher. His first successful composition was Hymnus (1873), a patriotic choral work. His fame grew steadilyin part owing to encouragement from Johannes Brahms and Franz Liszt and after the publication of the first set of his Slavonic Dances (1878), Dvorák enjoyed wide popularity. Brahms befriended him and enabled his music to be performed and published in Germany.
