It was not until he was nineteen years old that he chose to pursue a musical career after hearing a performance of a Claude Debussy work. As a composer he was primarily self-taught. From the beginning, choral music was of great importance in Durey’s productivity. The first work to gain recognition in the music world was for a piano duet titled Carillons . At a 1918 concert this work attracted the interest of Maurice Ravel , who recommended him to his publisher. Durey communicated with his colleague, Darius Milhaud , and asked him to contribute a piano piece that would bring together the six composers who, in 1920 were dubbed Les Six . Durey was the oldest member and in the beginning was the moving spirit of the renowned assembly of composers. However much acclaim they received, Durey did not participate in the group’s 1921 collaborative work Les Mariés de la Tour Eiffel , a decision which was a source of great irritation to Jean Cocteau After the Groupe des Six period Durey continued with his career. He was Secretary General of the Fédération Musicale Populaire and later of the Association Française des Musiciens Progressistes. Louis Durey Works Durey's music for the theatre includes the "Chant des partisans coréens" and incidental music among other works. Durey wrote a Concertino for piano, wind instruments, double bass and timpani, a Mouvement symphonique for piano and strings and a string Sinfonietta, as well as a Fantaisie concertante for cello, among other relatively large scale compositions. His chamber music includes a flute sonatina, a string trio and Les soirées de Vallère for wind quintet, in addition to his three string quartets. Durey's political affiliations are clear from his setting of two poems by Ho Chi Minh and the choral La longue marche, with words by Mao Tse Tung.

Durey ist nie so stark hervorgetreten wie seine jüngeren Kollegen und zog sich auch bald wieder aus der Gruppe zurück (so versagte er auch die Mitarbeit an dem gemeinsam komponierten Ballett Le Mariès de la Tour Eiffel "), um sich kommunistischer Kulturpolitik zu widmen. Demzufolge blieb er auch als Komponist weitgehend unbekannt. Schon Anfang der Jahre distanzierte er sich von Jean Cocteau , der für die "Six" die Rolle eines spirituellen Mentors inne hatte. Zur Zeit der deutschen Besatzung war er in der Résistance aktiv und verfasste antifaschistische Lieder. Nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg blieb er Kommunist strikter Observanz, komponierte nur wenig und lebte von Musikkritiken in einer kommunistischen Zeitung.

He was the oldest, but probably the least well-known of the six composers who are called Les Six Louis Durey was the son of a businessman. He had no idea that he wanted to be a composer until he heard the opera Pélléas et Mélisande by Claude Debussy . He was then already 19 years old. He taught himself how to compose. Durey became a member of the group called Les Six in . However, he did not take part in the music they wrote together in called Les Mariés de la Tour Eiffel . This made Jean Cocteau very annoyed. Durey became interested in left-wing politics and later joined the Communist Party . During the years of the Nazi occupation of World War II , he worked with the French Resistance and wrote anti-Fascist songs. After the war he had strong Communist ideas. This made it difficult for him to be successful in the world of music. In 1950 he got the job of music critic for a communist newspaper in Paris.

    Extractions: Compact Disc CDA67257 'Les Six' was the appellation given to a group of young French composers circa 1920 who briefly worked together as a counter-offensive to the excesses and giganticism of 'late-Romantics' typified by such composers as Mahler and Schoenberg. But the movement didn't last long and each of the 'six' soon went his (or in one case her) own way. The most familiar names of the six today are Poulenc, Honegger, Milhaud and Auric. Also, to some extent, Germaine Tailleferre. The least remembered member of the group is undoubtedly Louis Durey, who died as recently as 1979. Like Britain's Rutland Boughton and Alan Bush, his career was seriously hampered because of his well-publicised political beliefs. He was a communist, even setting to music some of the writings of Ho Chi Minh. Durey's turn in our French Song Edition has now come, and this disc assembles a programme of his virtually unknown songs including settings of Apollinaire's Bestiaire, the only composer to set all thirty of them. Recorded at Champs Hill, West Sussex, on 11 12 13 November 2000
