He was "the most celebrated Italian musician of his generation" He was born at Arezzo , and studied with various local musicians. In 1637 he joined the Franciscan order. While he was in Volterra he turned more toward secular music, probably due to the patronage of the powerful Medici family. Here he also came in contact with Salvator Rosa , who wrote librettos for a number of Cesti's cantatas . By 1650 Cesti's calling as a monk and his success as a singer and composer for operas was coming into conflict, and he was officially reprimanded. In 1652 he became a member of the court at Innsbruck of Archduke Ferdinand Karl . After holding a post somewhere in Florence as maestro di cappella , he entered the papal chapel in 1660. In 1666 he became Vice-Kapellmeister at Vienna , and died at Venice in 1669.

Born Pietro Cesti, he adopted the name Antonio when he joined the Franciscan order. He had already been a choir boy in Arezzo. Although details of his musical training are uncertain, it seems likely he studied with Abbatini, and possibly with Carissimi and Luigi Rossi . He joined the Franciscans in Volterra in 1637, was elected organist of the Cathedral there in 1643, and in 1645 was confirmed as master of music of the Volterra seminary and of the Cathedral. He then moved to Rome, evidently with the ulterior purpose of ingratiating himself with the Pope so he could be released from his vows. Cesti, a fine tenor who often took leading roles in his own and others' operas, sang for the Pontiff four times, was released from his vows in March 1659, in the understanding he would remain a secular priest, and that year joined the Papal Choir. In 1661 the Pope granted him leave for a temporary trip to Florence in connection with the wedding festivities of Duke Cosimo III of Medici and the French Princess Marguerite Louise d'Orléans. From there, he went straight back to Innsbruck and Ferdinand Karl, while the angered Pope threatened to excommunicate him.

Cesti's career took an important turn with the performance of "Orontea" at the Teatro dei S.S. Apostoli, Venice, in 1649. It enjoyed exceptional popularity throughout Italy for several decades. Two new operas, "Alessandro vincitor di se stesso" and "Il Cesare amante", were performed in Venice in 1651. "L'Argia" was performed at Innsbruck to celebrate the visit of the recently abdicated Queen Christina of Sweden. Antonio Cesti Works Cesti's early Venetian operas represented the first significant competition for Cavalli , who had virtually ruled the stage since Monteverdi 's death. He generally avoided the descending chromatism ostinato basses so effectively used by Cavalli in his earlier operas. From 1644 Cesti was apparently organist both at the Volterra Cathedral and at S. Croce in Florence; he became magister musices at Volterra in 1645. Around 1647 he was ordained to the priesthood. During the late 1640s he also served members of the Medici family, including Cardinal Gian Carlo. His first opera, Orontea (libretto G. Cicognini), performed in Venice in 1649, was a sensational success; it was followed by a number of other successes, including Il Cesare amante (1651). Meanwhile Cesti was also gaining favor on the stage as a tenor. In 1652 he was appointed Chor-Kapellmeister at the Innsbruck court of Archbishop Ferdinand Karl, a position he held until 1665. In 1658 he sang at the papal chapel, but upon achieving release from his monastic orders the following year he promptly returned to Innsbruck. (Some have suggested that he sought the papal appointment expressly in order to gain favor to secure this release.) When the archbishop's court disbanded in 1665, Cesti followed it to Vienna, where his
