    Extractions: Dawson along with José White, William Grant Still, George Theophilus Walker, and many others forms part of a long line of African-American composers and performers whose classical music heritage and artistic ancestors included an African-English composer and conductor named Samuel Coleridge-Taylor. In the second decade of the 20th century, he was the first man of African heritage to conduct the New York Philharmonic and his ability was described by those who played under him as being on a par with the finest European conductors of the day. Performers of African heritage could also be found in Europe in the early 19th century. Beethoven composed his well-known "Kreutzer" sonata for a violinist of African-English heritage by the name of Augustus Bridgetower. Over twenty-five years ago, CBS Records issued a short-lived series of LP recordings devoted to the music of African-American and African-European composers who were active from the 18th through the 20th centuries. The recordings were conducted by this country's best-known African-American maestro, Paul Freeman. Unfortunately, since the advent of the compact disc and the subsequent purchase of the recording division of CBS by Sony, those rare and now coveted LP releases have been deleted from the firm's catalog and as of this writing, there are no plans afoot to re-release the material on compact disc.

Boulogne was born on the West Indies island of Guadeloupe, where his mother Nanon was a slave. Boulogne’s father was a Frenchman, George de Bologne Saint-Georges. He owned the plantation on which Joseph spent his early childhood. The word "Chevalier" means "Knight" in French. It was a title of nobility in the Kingdom of France. Joseph could not inherit his father's status as a member of the nobility, because his mother was an African. Even so, he was called "Chevalier de Saint-Georges" from a young age. At age ten Saint-Georges moved to France with his parents. There he continued his studies in classical music. He was tutored in violin by Jean-Marie Leclair, and studied composition with Francois-Joseph Gossec. Saint-Georges also spent six years at the boarding school of Texier de La Boessiere, a master of arms. Athletics and fencing brought him a reputation at an early age. He swam across the River Seine in winter with one arm tied behind his back. As an adult he signed his surname "Saint-George" and that became the normal spelling in French. Saint-Georges’ military career began in 1761 as an officer in the King's Guard. In his music career, the Conductor of the prestigious Le Concert des Amateurs orchestra chose Saint-Georges as First Violin in 1769. Saint-Georges made his public debut as a violin soloist during the 1772-73 concert seasons, performing his own violin concertos. Many say that Saint-Georges demonstrated the influence of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. He has even been called "Le Mozart Noir" or "The Black Mozart". History shows that Mozart came to Paris in 1778 to study the”Paris School" of composition while Saint-Georges was a member. In 1775, Queen Marie-Antoniette appointed Saint-Georges as her music director, and King Louis XVI named him director of the Paris Opera. Saint-Georges was also the first person of African descent to join a Masonic Lodge in France. He was initiated in Paris to "Les 9 Soeurs" a Lodge belonging to the Grand Orient of France.

I have made it a rule to pepper posts of music into my more political observations. I shall continue to do so as music is an enormous passion of mine. I want today to write about a virtually unknown composer, Joesph Boulogne sometimes referred to as Chevalier de Saint-Georges. There is a reason he is unknown which I shall get to in a little. Boulogne was a contemporary of Mozart and wrote many fine Concerti for violin, he wrote opera and symphonies as well. That was not the limit of his talent, he was music teacher to the Queen of France, conductor, a military man and a master of fencing. He was also a bit of a ladies man which got him in a little trouble throughout his life. However the extraordinary thing about Joseph Boulogne is not the compass of his talents but that he ever got as far as he did.

Not only is it not in Paris' department, the 75th - it is in the Hauts-de-Seine, which loops around from the south to the west of the city. Unlike the up-tone 16th, Boulogne-Billancourt is, or was, a worker's and artists' paradise. The Seine curves upwards going through Paris, and in the west it makes a deep dip southward, before heading north again, along the west side of the Bois de Boulogne.
