Extractions: Luigi Boccherini (1743 - 1805) Luigi Boccherini was born in the Italian town of Lucca in Tuscany. His father played double-bass and cello and taught and encouraged his son to learn the latter instrument, and the young Luigi was giving public concerts while in his teens. As a young adult and professional cellist he met with and toured across Europe with the violinist Filipp Manfredi, sometimes joined by other musicians to play string trios or quartets. On tour they spent some time in Paris before Boccherini eventually settled in Madrid, where he served his new-found patron the Infante Don Luis. It was in Madrid he composed much of his musical output. Upon the death of this patron, he also composed for the Prince Frederick William II of Prussia and then Lucien Bonaparte (the brother of Napoleon who was the French Ambassador to Spain at that time). He stayed in Spain for the remainder of his life. Boccherini was a contemporary of Joseph Haydn and their music bears some similarities since both composers wrote in the predominant style of the day which established the Classical Period . Although both composers were almost equally prolific, Haydn's music has tended to overshadow that of Boccherini, which is generally not so well known. Boccherini created pieces which were pleasant and melodic, and largely undemanding of the listener, although he demonstrated a certain creativity in his ready assimilation of some of the musical elements of his adopted homeland. Specifically he composed a number of guitar quintets and included some Spanish styles and dance forms within these and other works.

Extractions: Italian composer and cellist; one of the most prolific composers of chamber music of the 18th century. After study in Lucca with Franceso Vanucci and in Rome with Giovanni Battista Costanzi, he received an appointment at the Viennese imperial court theater. During the early 1760s his music began to be noticed in Vienna. In 1766 he joined violinist Filippo Manfredi on a concert tour that took him to Paris, where his first publications appeared in 1767. The tour continued to Madrid in 1768 or 1769, where Boccherini received a post as composer and cellist at the court of the Infante Don Luis. Upon the latter's death in 1785 the composer sought employment at the court of Frederick William of Prussia, who was also a cellist. He sent new works to the prince, such as the op. 22 string quartets and the op. 25 quintet. In 1786 his perseverance was rewarded: he was made chamber musician in the Berlin court of newly crowned King Frederick William. There he produced a large portion of his extant chamber works. After the king's death in 1797 the composer subsisted mostly on a pension from his Madrid appointment and on proceeds from a handful of publications.

Boccherini is an ideal vehicle for trying the wonderful combination of two cellos. The abundant output of the greatest Italian composer of instrumental music of his generation includes, besides the works for cello already mentioned, some significant chamber music 113 quintets with two cellos, a form invented by him, 91 quartets, of which he was one of the first initiators, trios, and works for various combinations of instruments. His production also includes an opera, 21 symphonies, and a remarkable Stabat Mater. His style is very personal, already beyond baroque style, but not yet completely classical. With Sturm und Drang qualities, always beautifully written for the instruments, his cello parts are, naturally, a joy to play. Let me point out some pieces particularly interesting for both their musical content and their technical appeal to the cellists: The following Gerard numbers are really worth exploring: G. 265, 266, 279, 283 and 291.

Su padre, Leopoldo di Antonio Boccherini, virtuoso del contrabajo y violonchelista ocasional, había ya tenido dos hijos de su esposa María Santa di Domenico Prosperi: la mayor, y futura bailarina, María Ester, y un muchacho, Giovanni Gastone, y tendría otros dos más: Anna-Matilda (1745) y Riccarda Gonzaga (1747). LUCCA (Los primeros 10 años) El 22 de febrero fue bautizado en la parroquia de San Salvatore in Mustolio (actual iglesia de la Misericordia) con los nombres de Rodolfo Luigi. Al poco la familia se traslado al número 38 de la Vía della Dogana (hoy Grazie), para reducir gastos de alquiler. Los luquenses eran unos grandes apasionados de la música y el teatro, tenian gran fama de competentes y muy exigentes.
