Extractions: Composer index Adolf Fredrik Lindblad Sweden (1801 - 1878) There was hardly an indigenous symphonic tradition to speak of in Sweden. A few rather modest works bearing the title sinfonia had been composed during the eighteenth century by Roman and Agrell, and several more by immigrant musicians, above all from Germany. The foremost classical symphonist in Sweden at the time is hardly known even to musicologists; Joachim Nikolas Eggert. His four symphonies have such qualities that they should be in the repertory, even internationally. At that time symphonies were not something that interested Swedish audiences, unless they were by foreign composers. Ambitious Swedish composers themselves admitted, with the exception of Franz Berwald, that they could not establish themselves as symphonists, a view borne out by the actions of audiences and critics. They tended to compose on a smaller scale, above all undemanding songs and piano music. Such intimate music belonged in the homes of the middle classes, rather than on the concert platform. Symphonic repertory was heard in such an environment, but not in orchestral form, rather as arrangements for piano-four hands. Especially renowned was the circle of the cultural elite that regularly used to gather at the Uppsala home of Malla Silfverstolpe, a colonel's widow. The most senior of this group was professor of history Erik Gustaf Geijer the elder, the first in a line of poet-musicians, who wrote both text and music of his songs. The romantic poet Atterbom would also be there. And in April 1823 Adolf Fredrik Lindblad was welcomed for the first time to Malla's literary-musical salon.

Extractions: Web encyclopedia-online.info Franz Adolf Berwald (born in Stockholm on July 23 and died there on April 3 ) was a composer. From a family with four generations of musicians, his father, a violnist in the Royal Opera Orchestra, taught young Berwald the violin from an early age, and was soon appearing in concerts. In 1811, Karl XIII (brother of Gustavus III ) came to power and restored the Royal Chapel; the following year Berwald started working there, as well as playing violin in the court orchestra and the opera, receiving lessons from Edouard Dupuy. He also started composing. The summers were off-season for the orchestra, and Berwald travelled around Scandinavia, Finland and Russia. Of his works from that time, a Septet and a Serenade he still considered worthwhile music in his later years. In 1818 Berwald started publishing the Musikalsk journal , later renamed Journal de musique , a periodical with easy piano pieces and songs by various composers as well as some of his own originals. In 1821, his Violin Concerto in C# minor was premiered by his brother August. It was not well received. Some people in the audience even burst out laughing during the slow movement.

Extractions: Pianist, fortepianist and harpsichordist, Mr. Montgomery has appeared throughout the U.S. and Europe as a soloist, as a four-hand player with partners Paul Hersh and Camelia Sima, and as a chamber musician. He studied at the Oberlin Conservatory with Joseph Schwartz and later with the Viennese pianist Paul Badura-Skoda. He offers the concertos of Bach, Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven, as well as a wide range of recital and chamber music repertoire. He also has a great love for early jazz and ragtime, as well as jazz-related concert music. He has recorded for RCA Victor Red Seal, BMG Arte Nova and Klavier Records International. Ludwig van Beethoven, Franz Schubert and the German Romantic Painters Caspar David Friedrich and Philipp Otto Runge. What did these Viennese composers (well, Beethoven was a German, but he lived in Vienna, at least) and Northern German artists have in common? Quite a bit, actually, and a close look at their technical "workshops" reveals some surprising aspirations. The painters could control space but not time, and the musicians were in just the opposite predicament. As it turns out, however, they all managed to have their cake and eat it, too. David Montgomery draws upon a long acquaintance with these works for an in-depth multi-media look at the ideals of Romanticism.
