Bellini's influence was not confined to opera and Chopin owes much to him, particularly in his handling of melody. Although Bellini is known primarily as a composer of opera, his Oboe Concerto enjoys some popularity. Operas Bellini's first great success was in 1827 when Il Pirata was staged at La Scala, Milan. The six further operas that he wrote include a version of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, I Capuletti i Montecchi, the famous and complicated La Sonnambula produced in Milan in 1831, the demanding opera set in Roman Gaul, Norma, staged at La Scala at the end of the same year, and the final work, I Puritani, mounted in Paris in 1835.

Gli era stata trasmessa dal vecchio don Vincenzo Tobia Bellini, suo nonno (originario dell'Abruzzo, a Catania nella seconda metà del Settecento e divenuto maestro di cappella del principe di Biscari) e poi dal padre, Rosario, (nella natia Catania svolgeva funzioni di maestro di cappella e insegnante di musica, organista e compositore) anche lui apprezzato musicista, ma sempre in bolletta e alle prese con la vita di tutti i giorni, tanto avara. Sposando Agata Ferlito, il 17 gennaio 1801, il giovane Rosario aveva messo casa in un appartamento al primo piano del palazzo Gravina-Cruyllas di fronte alla chiesa di San Francesco e con tre balconi sulla via del Corso. Ma dopo la nascita di Vincenzo (nella notte fra il 2 e il 3 novembre 1801) e degli altri figli (Carmelo, Francesco, Michela, Giuseppa, Mario e Maria), la famiglia, ormai numerosa, fu costretta a sloggiare per trasferirsi in una casa ancor più modesta, in via S. Agostino, a due passi dall'abitazione di don Vincenzo Tobia, che già da qualche tempo impartiva lezioni al promettente nipote, tirandoselo dappresso anche quando suonava nei salotti dell'aristocrazia e nelle chiese, per cui in breve tempo quel ragazzino, grazioso e simpatico era noto in tutta Catania

Bellini developed a reputation for fine craftsmanship, particularly in the way he forged an intricate relationship between the music and the libretto. Extractions: from Boston, Maria Chiacchio Vincenzo Bellini (Catania 3 novembre - Parigi 23 settembre 1835) was one of the greatest composer of Bel Canto in 1800. He begun his studies with his grandfather, who was an organist, and thanks to the help of a nobleman from Sicily, he continued them at the Conservatory in Naples. His first opera performed in Naples in 1825, captured the interest of the impresario domenico barbaja, who launched his musical carreer. In 1825- 1826 Bellini wrote Bianca e Gernando in Naples for barbaja, who gave him the task of another work for the following year. In Milan at La Scala theater, with Il Pirata , Bellini earned in short time an international fame. Bellini's vocals and Rossini 's vivacity joined together gave the opera a new age of lyricism. Bellini consolidated his new style in the other eight operas.
