Two centuries of ideological warfare In this period of millennial perspectives it is appropriate that we study the 3 ideological cataclysms which, over the last 500 years, have shattered the European spiritual continuum: The Catholic-Protestant polarization of western European Christianity . Christianity had frequently put forth divergent branches in previous centuries: Catholic, Eastern Orthodox , Coptic, Bogomil-Cathar, Hussite. among others. The persecution of heretics had a venerable history, nor were murderous conflicts over religious differences uncommon. All this history pales in comparison with the total devastation that overtook Europe through the continuous warfare unleashed by the Reformation and Counter-Reformation during the 16th and 17th centuries. Though the seeds of classicism were very much sown during his lifetime, his sons being some of the prime shapers of that movement, J. S. Bach remained largely fixed in the Baroque traditions yet was able to fashion them as no-one else, either before him or since, into a towering peak of structural grace and formal perfection. It is this supreme craftmanship, largely unrecognised at the time, which has earned Bach an enormous stature in later years among composers and musicians. The Bach family: But while his sons were to help found the new school, it was the old school training from the father which sowed this seed. By all accounts, the Bachs became a nerve centre for all things musical in the area, with their extended family of relatives, friends and musicians both local and visiting. Extractions: After competing unsuccessfully for an organist's post in Sangerhausen in 1702, Bach spent the spring and summer of 1703 as "lackey" and violinist at the court of Weimar and then took up the post of organist at the Neukirche in Arnstadt. In June 1707 he moved to St. Blasius, Mühlhausen, and four months later married his cousin Maria Barbara Bach in nearby Domheim. Bach was appointed organist and chamber musician to the Duke of Saxe-Weimar in 1708, and in the next nine years he became known as a leading organist and composed many of his finest works for the instrument. During this time he fathered seven children, including Wilhelm Friedemann and Carl Philipp Emanuel. When, in 1717, Bach was appointed Kapellmeister at Cöthen he was at first refused permission to leave Weimar and was allowed to do so only after being held prisoner by the duke for almost a month. Bach remained as Thomaskantor in Leipzig for the rest of his life, often in conflict with the authorities, but a happy family man and a proud and caring parent. His duties centred on the Sunday and feastday services at the city's two main churches, and during his early years in Leipzig he composed prodigious quantities of church music, including four or five cantata cycles, the Magnificat and the "St. John" and "St. Matthew Passions." He was by this time renowned as a virtuoso organist and in constant demand as a teacher and an expert in organ construction and design. His fame as a composer gradually spread more widely when, from 1726 onwards, he began to bring out published editions of some of his keyboard and organ music.

Four branches of it were known at the beginning of the i6th century, and in 1561 we hear of Hans Bach of Wechmar who is believed to be the father of Veit Bach (born about 1555). Extractions: It is one of history's curious facts that both Martin Luther, the great Christian reformer of the Renaissance, and Johann Sebastian Bach, the greatest of all Lutheran Church musicians of the Baroque Era, were educated as children in the same town of Eisenach, Germany. Historically, Luther stands as a titan among the religious thinkers of the 16th Century, and Bachâs 18th Century counterpoint is widely considered to be the pinnacle achievement in the development of contrapuntal music which had originated centuries before his time. As a religious reformer, Luther was an enthusiastic supporter of music within the German Church, viewing music as a great gift from God. Ever since Luther penned his famous chorale, "A Mighty Fortress Is Our God," some have speculated that the "fortress" in question was Wartburg Castle, which sits atop a hill in Eisenach. Dating back to 1067, the castle became the center of courtly life during the Middle Ages, and although it hosted many prominent noblemen over the centuries, Martin Luther, a monk hidden in its tower, was by far Wartburg Castle's most famous resident. Luther stayed there for 300 days, during which time he translated the New Testament into German. However, Luther was not the only famous inhabitant of Eisenach. Synonymous with musicians, the Bach family had developed a reputation for its many notable performers for more than two centuries when Johann Sebastian Bach was born in Eisenach on March 21, 1685, as the eighth and youngest child of musician parents. His father was not only a string player, but also a court trumpeter, and the town piper. And he was most probably J.S. Bachâs first music teacher. Bach shared more in common with Martin Luther than just attending the same school in which Luther had received his childhood education: he shared Luther's attitude toward music, viewing it, above all, as a means of glorifying God. The Bach family trade was simply that of being musicians, and as a group, they had a rich musical lineage that extended far beyond the Eisenach branch of the family. It was said that almost every German town in the late 17th Century could boast of having at least one Bach as a musician.

His works, noted for their intellectual depth, technical command, and artistic beauty, have provided inspiration to nearly every musician in the European tradition, from Mozart to Schoenberg. Formative Years J. S. Bach was born in Eisenach, Germany, in 1685. His father, Ambrosius Bach, was the town piper in Eisenach, a post that entailed organizing all the secular music in town as well as participating in church music at the direction of the church organist, and his uncles were also all professional musicians ranging from church organists and court chamber musicians to composers, although Bach would later surpass them all in his art. In an era when sons were expected to assist in their fathers' work, we can assume J. S. Bach began copying music and playing various instruments at an early age. Bach's mother died when he was still a young boy and his father suddenly passed away when J. S. Bach was 9, at which time J. S. Bach moved in with his older brother Johann Christoph Bach, who was the organist of Ohrdruf, Germany. While in his brother's house, J. S. Bach continued copying, studying, and playing music. According to one popular legend of the young composer's curiosity, late one night, when the house was asleep, he retrieved a manuscript (which may have been a collection of works by Johann Christoph's former mentor, Johann Pachelbel) from his brother's music cabinet and began to copy it by the moonlight. This went on nightly until Johann Christoph heard the young Sebastian playing some of the distinctive tunes from his private library, at which point the elder brother demanded to know how Sebastian had come to learn them.

He was perhaps the most accomplished organist and harpsichordist of his time. Today Bach is regarded as the greatest composer of the Baroque era, and, by many, as the greatest composer of all time.
