Abel) Composer and player of the Viola da Gamba, born in Köthen, Thuringia. Son of Christian Ferdinand Abel, a Gamba player in Bach's orchestra in Köthen, 1717-1723). Karl Friedrich himself became a student under Johann Sebastian Bach during the latter's years in Leipzig. He was a sometime musician in Dresden, employed by the King of Poland, and he later moved to England where, in 1759, he became chamber-musician to Queen Charlotte. In 1764 Abel became a close friend of Johann Christian Bach a son of his old teacher in Leipzig, recently appointed Music Master to Queen Charlotte, and the two of them started a popular series of concerts (known as the Bach-Abel concerts) in London, which lasted until J.C. Bach's death in 1782. Abel and Bach even lived together for a long time. They were the first to perform Haydn's music in London. Abel was also a friend of the painter Thomas Gainsborough. Abel was the composer of several original works and he also composed the ouverture to Arne and Bickerstaffe's opera Daphne and Amintor (1765). One of his symphonies was even copied by Mozart who substituted Clarinets for the Oboes used by Abel in the original (Mozart: K. 18, Abel: Symphony in E-Flat Major, Opus 7). (Note 1)

He was a fine player on the viola da gamba , and composed important music for that instrument. Abel was born in Cöthen , the son of Christian Ferdinand Abel , the principal viola da gamba and cello player in the court orchestra of Johann Sebastian Bach . There is no proof that he studied at Thomasschule Leipzig , but it was on Bach's recommendation that in 1748 he was able to join Johann Adolph Hasse 's court orchestra at Dresden where he remained for 10 years. In 1759 he went to England , and became chamber-musician to Queen Charlotte . He gave a concert of his own compositions in London, performing on various instruments, one of which, the pentachord, was newly invented. In 1762, Johann Christian Bach , the eleventh son of Johann Sebastian Bach , joined him in London, and the friendship between him and Abel led, in 1764 or 1765, to the establishment of the famous Bach-Abel concerts, England's first subscription concerts ever. In those concerts, many famous guest artists appeared, and the works of Haydn received their first English performance.

Extractions: J. S. Bach 's Collegium musicum. He was a member of the court orchestra in Dresden from 1743 through 1757, but ultimately settled in London wher he gave his first concert in 1759. In February 1764, he gave a first joint concert with Johann Christian , both of them serving as chamber musicians to Queen Charlotte from about this time. Together they established the Bach-Abel concerts, a series of ten to fifteen concerts given each year from 1765 to 1781. From 1781, these concerts were housed in a room built for the purpose on Hanover Square, the works performed being principally those of Bach and Abel themselves. The performers included Abel himself on viola da gamba, of which he was one of the last great proponents, and numerous Continental musicians. Following a visit to the Continent from 1782, including a stay at the Potsdam court of the Crown Prince of Prussia, he returned to London and was prominent in a series of concerts beginning in 1785. His works include two dozen symphonies as well as concertos, overtures, and other orchestral works, string quartets, string trios, sonatas, and other chamber music for various combination, as well as sonatas and other pieces for viola da gamba.

Extractions: Composer Index Johann Sebastian Bach composed his famous solo cello suites. Following his education at the Thomasschule under J.S. Bach, he initially took a post under Johann Adolf Hasse in the Dresden court orchestra, and remained there for a decade before traveling to London 1759. There he met and eventually shared a room with Johann Christian Bach This relationship flourished during the next twenty years and J.C. Bach and Abel presented a series of subscription concerts to the London public at which Haydn's symphonies were first performed. Upon J.C. Bach's death in 1785, Abel continued his association with the London concerts on and off until his death in London on June 20, 1787. Many of Abel's symphonies, overtures, string quartets, concertos and sonatas were highly regarded in their day and widely published. As a virtuoso gambist, his (unpublished) chamber works for the viola da gamba are among the most developed and interesting of his compositions.

Extractions: A B ... Z CARL FRIEDRICH ABEL Born: Cöthen, 22 Dec 1723; died: London, 20 June 1787. German composer. By 1743 he was a bass viol player in the Dresden court orchestra He left in 1757-8 and went to London, where he directed his first joint concert with J.C. Bach in 1764; both men became chamber musicians to Queen Charlotte about this time. The Bach-Abel series, begun in 1765 and comprising 10-15 concerts each year, was given in their own rooms in Hanover Square from 1775. Abel directed alternate concerts, including many of his own works, often playing himself and introducing performers from Germany and Paris (where he visited regularly). He and Bach also gave concerts elsewhere, including at court. After Bach's death (1782) Abel spent two years in Germany but was active in the 1785-7 series, the Grand Professional Concerts. Abel was one of the last professional bass violists; his expressive Adagios were especially praised. As a composer he was most prolific in symphonies and overtures (over 40 works), sonatas for two and three instruments, and bass viol pieces. His works, mostly in three movements, are generally genial and energetic but use a rich harmonic style, often unusual phrase-lengths, and melodies of instrumental character. Abel was one of a long line of musicians. His grandfather Clamor Heinrich (1634-96) was a composer, organist and bass violist who worked at Celle, Hanover and Bremen. His father, Christian Ferdinand (1682-1737), also a bass violist, was a colleague of J.S. Bach at Cöthen, and his elder brother, Leopold August (1718-94), was a violinist at north German courts and composed several instrumental works.
