Dispersion of heavy metals and acidification by sulphur and nitrogen oxides are just two examples of environmental chemistry questions at issue. Environmental chemistry also deals with investigations of organic pollutants like PCB and dioxins. Common to these toxic organic pollutants is persistence, i.e. a pronounced resistance against degradation. Many persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are chlorinated compounds, but also brominated and fluorinated compounds may have a negative influence on the environment (e.g. brominated flame-retardants and freons). Halogenated aromatics can be formed and emitted from many industrial processes as well, with combustion as just one example. I have devoted a major portion of my professional life to these issues, both common pollutants like nitrogen oxides and more exotic compounds like brominated diphenylethers. My work has been focused on accomplishing tangible results by investigating, providing solutions and training.
