Forensic Chemistry At Keith Borer Consultants Forensic chemistry is the application of analytical chemistry techniques to determine or verify the possible cause of an event. http://www.borer.demon.co.uk/chemistry.htm
Extractions: Forensic chemistry is the application of analytical chemistry techniques to determine or verify the possible cause of an event. At Keith Borer Consultants, we have built up considerable experience in many areas of forensic chemistry. These include the sensitive methods used to detect and analyse fragments of glass, paint and firearms discharge residues. We also specialise in the investigation of fires and explosions and in determining what constitutes an explosive device, as well as investigating specific contaminants in soils. To speak to our expert contact: The examination of a scene of a fire can provide clues as to how and where a fire started. Careful consideration of a scene and chemical analysis of debris may also provide information about whether the fire was started accidentally or deliberately, the correct identification of the seat of the fire, the presence of any accelerants and the reliable evidential linking of accelerants to a suspect. We cover all of these areas of expertise. Explosions and Explosives Explosions may occur deliberately or accidentally in many different types of situations such as domestic, commercial, criminal or terrorist. We report on cases involving identifying the existence and reliability of trace evidence, the cause of explosions and the capacity of materials to form explosive devices. We have extensive experience in explosive devices and reported regularly on such incidents in Northern Ireland.

Extractions: An essay written for the Encyclopedia of Ecology and Environmental Management, Editor: Peter Calow, Blackwell Science , Oxford, 1998. Tropospheric chemistry refers to the chemical processes occurring in the troposphere by which trace substances released into the atmosphere from natural and anthropogenic sources are oxidised. The reactions form stable compounds, such as carbon dioxide and water, or more soluble compounds, such as peroxides or acids, which are rained out or deposited from the atmosphere. See also Stratospheric Chemistry. The troposphere The troposphere contains an enormous range of inorganic and organic trace substances. Many of them, such as methane, nitrous oxide, dimethyl sulphide, are released by natural processes. Many, such as the nitrogen oxides, a variety of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and sulphur dioxide are released by man's activities. Others, such as ozone, carbon monoxide and nitric acid, are formed in the atmospheric oxidation of the compounds released from both natural and anthropogenic sources. Initiation of tropospheric oxidation: the hydroxyl radical, OH
Extractions: An essay written for the Encyclopedia of Ecology and Environmental Management, Editor: Peter Calow, Blackwell Science , Oxford, 1998. The term refers principally to the chemical processes that determine the concentration of ozone in the stratosphere. It also refers to the reactions that oxidise and decompose trace substances released into the atmosphere from natural and anthropogenic sources. If these are stable enough to escape oxidation in the troposphere, they find their way across the tropopause into the stratosphere and are oxidised there. See also Tropospheric Chemistry. The stratosphere Here we are concerned with the lower part of the stratosphere, from a height of about 15 km at the tropopause to the stratopause, about 50 km above the earth's surface. In the lower stratosphere the temperature increases with height from ca. -50 ºC at the tropopause to ca. ºC at the stratopause. From a meteorological viewpoint, the region is very stable with little vertical mixing. The pressure falls from ca. 0.2 atm at the tropopause to ca. 10-3 atm at the stratopause.
