In realtà la domanda è oziosa, benché ovvia. I problemi della nostra distribuzione sono noti e ci sono meravigliosi esempi delle più svariate cinematografie che sui nostri schermi non vedremo mai. Non c'è però da preoccuparsi quando il film in questione è una mega-produzione come "Hero". Chiediamoci piuttosto come fare a vedere tanti altri piccoli film di tutto il mondo che non possono contare sul suo budget, il suo cast, o i suoi contatti al di fuori della Cina (la Miramax). Tutto sommato si è sempre saputo che "Hero" l'avremmo visto, anche se ormai sono passati due anni dalla sua realizzazione. Il film fece scalpore alla sua uscita; il regista Zhang Yimou è un nome importantissimo e ben conosciuto al di fuori della Cina, da cui all'inizio degli anni '90 emerse anche al pubblico occidentale insieme a Chen Kaige. Presto mi sono reso conto, però, che il confronto diretto era inevitabile, e che lo stesso Yimou ha lavorato su questo aspetto. Il film rappresenta infatti un contraltare notevole al suo predecessore; se " Hero " era un lucente disegno politico che tendeva all'universalità, qui i protagonisti si muovono "in piccolo" su uno sfondo che non si apre e non si chiude. Come " Hero " non aveva dei personaggi, ma delle tipologie, questo film è basato tutto sulle scelte individuali di personalità che deragliano dal binario delle "vicende del mondo". Raised with her older brother in an urban, working-class part of Beijing, Zhang was originally interested in dance and gymnastics. Her entrance into the dance world came when she was 11, as she was accepted to a secondary school affiliated with Beijing Dancing College. During the 4 years that she was trained in dance, she managed to pick up some awards, including one at the National Young Dancer competition. But even though a career in dance seemed promising for the graceful Zhang, she became frustrated with the art by the time she was 15, and opted to act instead. She therefore enrolled in the Central Drama Academy in Beijing, where she received her dramatic training. Zhang Ziyi's calling was answered when she least expected it.
