Extractions: EN ROUTE TO a record review, I stumbled over the fact that Neil Young has virtually scored, or at least composed significant passages for, the soundtrack to my life. Records are like that, I suppose. Only the most deluded confuse artist with artifact; that said, it must be both a burden and a rush knowing millions out there consider you their friend. To grasp this one need merely consider the psychic devastation experienced by fans when Presley, Lennon and Cobain died. In this world of diminishing returns, then, sometimes that big ol' twelve-inch hunk of black plastic (okay, okay; a four-and-three-quarter-inch chunk of shiny aluminum) is the only sure thing waiting for you at the end of the day. While I don't exactly plant my tired bones on the floor and pour out my troubles to my records, their conversations are reassuringly familiar. What do they say? They can get precious and sentimental, as any good friend waxing nostalgic can. Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere , which Neil recorded with Crazy Horse in 1969, recalls the events of one summer when I wanted desperately to impress my best buddy's female cousin, who was visiting our small southern town. Having a crush at age 14 was bad enough; giving her a name like "Cowgirl In The Sand" guaranteed she'd remain out of reach.

Extractions: "They all sound the same" schreit jemand aus dem Publikum. "It's all one song" antwortet Neil Young ruhig, bevor er beginnt, auf der '97 Liveplatte "Year Of The Horse" in die Saiten seiner Gitarre zu hauen.
Extractions: Cartoons Year of the Horse. To wrap up his year on a positive note, he's now helped assemble a solid-gold cast for the first of The Bridge School Concerts albums, which is culled from the fund-raising shows that Young helped initiate over a decade ago. Young, of course, is all over The Bridge School Concerts Volume One (Reprise Records) like a rash. "This is a song I'd like to do for all the kids everywhere," he announces, before leaning into "I Am a Child," a stark strum from his Buffalo Springfield days, which opens the album. Later on, he joins in with Elvis Costello for a scrappy yet sincere "Alison," and then helps Nils Lofgren through "Believe," adding raspy blasts of harmonica and equally raspy vocals. As for the rest of the album, the line-up includes such Young cronies as Pearl Jam and twangmeister Tom Petty, along with Beck , Bowie, Bonnie Raitt , and the Pretenders (who cruise through a sweetly swinging "Sense of Purpose"). And, yes, there are surprises. Known more for menace than melody, Al Jourgensen and his Ministry Pretenders Patti Smith's strident "People Have the Power" is the perfect closer, reminding us why we're listening in the first place: people really do have the power, if they check their egos at the door and pitch in for a decent cause. You can almost picture Young offstage, nodding his shaggy head in agreement. Check for yourself, soon, when MTV screens their

Extractions: Young achieved his initial fame as a member of Buffalo Springfield, who disbanded in 1968. In 1969 he released two records, Neil Young , and Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere , which firmly established his merit as a solo artist. In 1970, he joined David Crosby, Graham Nash, and Steven Stills to make Deja Vu , later devoting himself to making records with his most consistent backing band, Crazy Horse (Billy Talbot, bass; Ralph Molina, drums; Danny Whitten, guitar (d 1972); Frank "Poncho" Sampedro, guitar), along with a rotating cast of musicians that continue to back his efforts to this day. Young is comparable only to Bob Dylan in terms of his contributions to songwriting and rock n' roll, and is still an important and vital performer who challenges the status quo and his own reputation with an alarming regularity.

Jack Feeny Reviews Reviews of albums released from 1969 to 1992. http://www.geocities.com/jackfeeny/young.htm
Extractions: "The field open to the musician is not a miserable keyboard of seven notes, but an immeasurable keyboard still almost entirely unknown on which, here and there only, separated by shadows thick and unexplored, a few of the millions of keys of tenderness, of passion, of courage, of serenity which compose it, each as different from the others as one universe from another universe, have been found by a few great artists who do us the service, by awakening in us something corresponding to the theme they have discovered, of showing us what richness, what variety, is hidden unbeknowst to us within that great unpenetrated and disheartening darkness of our soul which we take for emptiness and nothingness."

Extractions: God, it seems Neil Young is never going to go away - and thank the stars for that. To the younger crowd here, he's the godfather of grunge (it's ironic that Young 's hipness has even outlived that passi term). To the older set, he's one of the last, genuine icons from a bygone era. Nonetheless, both fan demographics are here tonight to see the hometown boy who made good - and both demographics are absolutely ecstatic. Of course, Young doesn't really fit the rock-god mould like a Plant or a Daltrey - he's more like the cool, old uncle everyone wishes they had. And though he sometimes borders on the dorky and even corny, Young 's aged in a way that is infinitely less embarrassing than all those wrinkled, curly-locks rockers. Regardless, nobody can dispute Neil 's chops - which he effortlessly demonstrates with his current country-rock unit (featuring long-term cohorts Ben Keith and Donald "Duck" Dunn , as well as
PopMatters Reviews of reissues of Everybody's Rockin' and Old Ways. http://popmatters.com/music/reviews/y/youngneil-everybodys.shtml
Extractions: Long lauded for the twisted paths of his storied career, these two new reissues from Neil Young's Geffen period illustrate the far-flung and sometimes over-reaching scope of his artistry. Virtually ignored upon release and not generally considered among his best work, in hindsight they both still offer up some distinct pleasures. Everybody's Rockin' is a straight-up rockabilly album, with Young and his band of the moment The Shocking Pinks romping through some 1950s chestnuts like "Bright Lights, Big City," (Jimmy Reed) "Mystery Train," (Elvis Presley) and "Betty Lou's Got a New Pair of Shoes" (Bobby Freeman). For the most part the run-throughs are spirited and fun, but Young's voice still sounds a bit awkward and ill-fitting for this material. Also included here are some original tunes in the spirit of the cover choices, like, "Kinda Fonda Wanda," the title track "Everybody's Rockin'", and the only single released from the album, "Wonderin'." The latter track is the lone tune which stands on its own merits, probably because it sounds the least like a sock-hop standard. From '50s rock, Young took another left turn on his next album, into country music.
PopMatters Review of Silver And Gold. http://popmatters.com/music/reviews/y/youngneil-silver.shtml
Extractions: The greatest chameleon of the past 30 years started to compose his first true solo record (as in DIY), but as is his way, the course changed a couple of times. And when he decided to flesh the material out with other musicians, he grabbed stellar sidemen including Spooner Oldham, "Duck" Dunn and Jim Keltner, along with longtime associate Ben Keith (who co-produced the record). The result is a relaxed, casual journey through some heartfelt and pensive songs that find Young in both a thankful and inquisitive mood. Comparisons will most certainly be made with Harvest and Harvest Moon because of the acoustic tone, but don't play the trilogy card right away. This Neil Young is older, wiser, more reflective and less judgmental. At 10 tracks and 40 minutes, it's no coincidence that Silver And Gold plays like an album with two sides. Emotional differences? Now versus then? The opening number, "Good To See You," is as simple and direct as it sounds. "Daddy Went Walkin" deals with broken families from the perspective of a hopeful child, and in "Buffalo Springfield Again," Neil looks back at a different kind of broken family, and forward to enjoying the time after wounds have healed. In "The Great Divide," he's not fitting in among the broken plans and roads of uncertainty, and the arrow of blame sometimes points straight back. "Distant Camera" and "Horseshoe Man" deal with the rebuilding and refocusing of lives, as well as the inability to easily do so sometimes. But regardless of whether you jump or need to be pushed, Young feels that ultimately a clear, honest love is the answer. As he states in "Razor Love": "on the road there's no place like home / Silhouettes on the window."; and love "cuts clean through everything."
Extractions: How it happened.... I'd just done a gig in London in a covers band with a friend of mine, Brian Eade. On our journey back up to Norfolk, listening to Tonight's the Night, we got into thinking what a shame it was we couldn't go out and just play tunes by Neil Young. And then it happened. We realised we could, and also that Brian looks a bit like Neil........... Don't Spook the Horse - recreating the unmistakable spirit and stage humour of a man still refusing to burn out or fade away. We take you on a journey through Neil Young's long and varied career. From delicate acoustic masterpieces like "Through My Sails" and country classics such as "Heart of Gold", to the powerful folk rolk anthems he is so well loved for.
