The local band Beyond are playing the coliseum. Bring earplugs, I am warned. Brace yourself for power-chord anthems about social justice and the struggle to get by. Real rock music in Hong Kong? I have a ticket for the show. I also have my doubts. The city is a one-music-industry town. The industry is called Canto-pop, and it is hard-core. Pop idols, chosen for their smiles and hairstyles, are briefly famous and then fondly recalled. During their 15 minutes, the idols crank out dozens of CDs and sing anodyne love ditties live to canned music. They also underact in bad movies and hawk cellphones and date each other to fuel the gossip mags. Canto-pop's palace of dreams is the coliseum in East Kowloon. It seats 12,000, and top acts are expected to fill it several nights running. Leslie Cheung, a local legend who also happened to be a talented actor, once sold out the venue 24 times. Cheung jumped off the roof of a five-star hotel this past spring. He was 46 and had struggled with depression.

I'm very glad that we got a chance to jam together again. Thanks also to Cynthia up in Heaven. She gives me the strength and courage to go on." In his parting comments, the often controversial Paul Wong Kwoon-Chung took a shot at some of today's singing stars. Wong: "We never thought about making big money, driving nice cars or living in fancy flats like the stars. We just hope that people remember there's a rock band in Hong Kong called Beyond!" Although the boys bade their fans good-bye at the show, they will not be separated for long as reports have emerged stating that Beyond will hold three additional Hung Hom Coliseum concerts from June 19th through to June 21st. A formal announcement is expected later this week. Reportedly, proceeds from the first concert in the June run will go to victims of the SARS crisis. Among the celebrities in the crowd for the final show were: Daniel Chan Hiu-Tung, Edmond Leung Hon-Man, Hilary Tsui Ho-Ying, Andy Hui Chi-On, Alex Fong Lik-Sun and E-Kids. Celebrities that took in the penultimate fourth concert were: Shawn Yu Man-Lok, Jade Kwan Sum-Yin, Alvina Kong Yan-Yin and husband as well as Yolanda Yen Chor-Sin. The Council received more than 20 complaints from the public. The photograph was taken at a funeral parlour, apparently without the consent of his family members. The Council condemned the magazine for publishing the photograph in a sensational way, saying that the publication of such a picture had nothing to do with public interest, which would further aggravate the feelings of the family members of the deceased. In retrospect, the past year was not an eventful year as compared to the previous one in which the local media had weathered a rough passage through a stormy sea of protests against Eastweek magazine following the publication of a nude photo of a film actress abducted 12 years ago. After a suspension of about a year, Eastweek has resumed publication in September 2003 after a change of ownership.
