His mother Eugenia had spent several years in the United States in her youth. She nicknamed her younger son "Billy" because of her fascination with legendary American hero, Buffalo Bill. Wilder briefly studied law in Vienna before obtaining a newspaper job writing interviews, crime and sports stories, and hard-hitting personal profiles. T he Broadway and London musical productions of Sunset Boulevard , based on Billy Wilder's 1950 movie of the same name, and the 1995 remake of Sabrina In 1993, Billy Wilder (on right) revisited the Berlin site of his 1961 film, One, Two, Three . Here he is seen standing with Horst Buchholz, one of the film's stars, on the eastern side of the Brandenburg Gate, something they were not allowed to do during the filming because the East German authorities would not allow Wilder to film in their territory. The movie was something of a flop, partly because the Berlin Wall and East-West tensions went up just before the film's release, making the humor fall flat. The picture, with James Cagney as a Coca-Cola executive in Berlin, has been better received in recent times.
