Search Lawrence Welk A lthough viewed as the musical epitome of the culture that produced Wonder Bread, American cheese, and "Fund with Dick and Jane" books, Lawrence Welk doesn't deserve to be written off as a stereotype entirely. Within the stream of products Welk put out over a period of 30-odd years can be found a few gemsmostly in his 60s material on Dot Records. Whether it's worth the effort to weed through all the junk to find them is another question. Welk was raised in a German-speaking hamlet in North Dakota, and did not learn English until he was 21, accounting for his distinctive accent. He began performing professionally at the age of 13, playing the accordion. After leaving high school, he went into music full-time, eventually forming two groups, the Biggest Little Band in America and the Hotsy-Totsy Boys. Within a few years, he joined the big band movement with a group that toured Midwest. Although written off as a hick by music critics, Welk was a shrewd businessman. He was a demanding taskmaster dedicated to producing a nostalgic, wholesome show. He maintained a roster of musical regulars, including ragtime pianist JoAnn Castle, accordion player Myron Floren, singer Norma Zimmer and Joe Feeney, organist Bob Ralston, guitarist

(The Man himself croons at show's end that you can visit L. W. Village "for a day, a weekend, or the rest of your life." Think about that.) Next, Lawrence appears in a stiff bust shot, to announce the particular year that we will be revisiting "through the miracle of tape." His eyes compel you and handing out pizza slices at the same time. Such "A=A" literalism "just folks" is the message in every frame of Welk.

For many years TV played lackey to the suburban lie; certainly Disney's vision precedes (and informs) Welk's. Ronald Reagan, leader of the western world when "Memories" began airing, could "remember a time when we didn't know we had a race problem in our country." But Disney integrated, Reagan forgot, and while "Memories" was taking hold, the devolving descendants of "All in the Family" were portraying an America where Ghetto Kid and Lesbian Cop trade wisecracks in Acts I through IV, only to unite in a tearful hug before the final Ragu commercial. It is only in Welkworld that American realities remain sublimated, as though white viewers' heads would explode at the merest suggestion of racial or cultural diversity. What is continually stunning about re-viewing these episodes is that the mom-and-populism they exude is false to the point of absurdity. Even in the most sentimentally reactionary Frank Capra films, bluebloods, immigrants and their black neighbors would unite behind a Jimmy Stewart or a Gary Cooper to vaguely further the American way. Yet in the foreign-accented Welk's America, there are no foreigners. But we have come to praise Welk.
