Born to Germans from Russia immigrants, in a sod farmhouse near Strasburg in south-central North Dakota, Lawrence Welk was always drawn to music. In his autobiography Wunnerful, Wunnerful he wrote, "my earliest clear memory is crawling toward my father who was holding his accordion. I can still recall the wonder and delight I felt when he let me press my fingers on the keys and squeeze out a few wavering notes." By the time he turned 17, Lawrence knew he could never be a farmer and that he really wanted to make music his life's work. In exchange for a $400 accordion, to be purchased by his dad, he agreed to stay on the farm and work for four more years. On his 21st birthday, March 11, 1924, he left home to pursue his dream. He had little money and couldn't speak English, but what he did have was his accordion, his talent, and an overwhelming desire to succeed. His legendary life's work had just begun. After delighting television viewers and concert-goers for four generations, the legendary Lawrence Welk Show is live again on stage in Branson, Missouri. Featuring some of the best-loved singers, dancers and musicians from the Lawrence Welk television show, as well as a sampling of new talent, it's a heart-warming reunion of the Welk Musical Family that you know and love.

Welk's so-called champagne music featured the accordion and organ and was distinctive for its lively style. Born to German immigrants in Strasburg, North Dakota, Welk studied the accordion while attending local public schools. He organized his first band in the 1920s and for 25 years traveled throughout the Midwest playing renditions of popular songs. He began receiving local and national radio exposure in the late 1920s. Welk received a booking in Los Angeles during the early 1950s, and there a local TV station began televising his performances. In 1955 the American Broadcasting Company (ABC), in need of low-budget programming, hired Welk for a Saturday night series, originally called “The Dodge Dancing Party.” The show, which was renamed “The Lawrence Welk Show” in 1959, featured a 27-piece band and a resident cast that gave solo and ensemble performances. Welk himself played the accordion, occasionally danced with a cast member, and made famous his musical cue, “a-one, a-two,” and his frequent comment, “wonderful, wonderful,” which he pronounced “wunnerful, wunnerful.” In 1956 Welk added a second TV series, “Top Tunes and New Talent” (1956-1958). “The Lawrence Welk Show” was canceled in 1971, not for low ratings but for failing to attract younger viewers. Although the critics were not impressed, Mr. Welk's show went on to last an astonishing 27 years. His format was simple: easy-listening music, what he referred to as "champagne music," and a "family" of wholesome musicians, singers, and dancers. The show ran on ABC for the first 16 years and was known in the early years as The Dodge Dancing Party. ABC canceled the show in 1971, not because of lack of popularity, but because it was "too old" to please advertisers. ABC's cancellation did little to stop Welk, who lined up more than 200 independent stations for a successful syndicated network of his own. Part of Welk's success can be attributed to his relationship with viewers. He meticulously compiled a "fever chart" which tallied pro and con comments received from viewers' letters. Performers with favorable comments became more visible on the show. In this way, the viewer also played an important role in his "family" of regulars. There were many show favorites throughout the years including the Lennon Sisters, who were brought to his attention by his son Lawrence Jr. who was dating Dianne Lennon in 1955. Other favorites included the Champagne Ladies (Alice Lon and Norma Zimmer); accordionist Myron Floren, who was also the assistant conductor; singer-pianist Larry Hooper; singers Joe Feeney and Guy Hovis; violinist Aladdin; dancers Bobby Burgess and Barbara Boylan; and Welk's daughter-in-law, Tanya Falan Welk.
