Extractions: Courtney's Creative Adventures LISA: Tell me about yourself as you were growing up. Courtney: I was an imaginative, active, funny kid- always busy doing, running, creating, playing- on my own, with my big brother Tuc or with friends. LISA: Who were the most positive influences you can think of? LISA: What or who brought out this creative side in you? Courtney: My mom is a creative genius she sprinkled delightful ideas down the path of my childhood leading me into creative thinking. She asked lots of questions, played "What-if" games, asked my opinion, enticed us with games of supposing, imagination, pretend, exploration and discovery. She did this everyday at breakfast, in the car, on walks. And she made it so much fun we had no idea it was good for us, for crying out loud! I now see that these funny games built my limber thought process. I am so grateful to her. LISA: Do you remember having one absolutely favorite project to do as a kid? Courtney: I made a lot of wooden doll statues from small wood pieces, markers, glue and feathers my version of the Kachina doll. Also, we- my older brother Tuc and I would gather up the neighborhood kids for games of Kick the Can, kick ball, Sardines. I also spent a lot of time drawing and writing and making "stuff"- which was heralded by my parents as "Wonderful!" "Fantastic!" "Out of this world!" Their unbridled enthusiasm and genuine interest made me feel ten feet tall! LISA: Do you think it was just a matter of time before you wrote this book?

Extractions: Website Highlights Epidemic of Overwork The New Zealand Council of Trade Unions is backing today's launch of a website which gives global support to the campaign for work-life balance. UK-based Hazards magazine is launching the website, www.hazards.org/workedtodeath , which draws attention to the global epidemic of deaths caused by overwork. "The reports on this site show the dire consequences of overwork including, in extreme cases, death," CTU President Ross Wilson said today. "All over the world, the challenge is to balance secure work, with time for family and a healthy lifestyle." Stress caused by overwork is a risk factor for heart attack, stroke and suicide. It is also identified as an issue in 'Healthy Work', a recent OSH publication which focuses on managing stress and fatigue in the workplace. Recognising the problem of overwork, the CTU is running a campaign for work-life balance called 'Get a Life!'

Liberty, democracy and international law throughout the world are desperately threatened; their relentless enemies are on the march." F.C. Watkins JP MP President RCA, 1938 Annual Conference. The General Election of 1935 took place within a reactionary domestic environment and the rising threat of Fascist aggression. Unemployment had begun to drop, but over two million still sought work. The RCA had 28 members standing as Labour candidates; one stood as a Liberal and was defeated and not one single member stood as a Conservative. All the RCA Labour candidates received some financial assistance, but only 10 were officially sponsored by the union. In relation to other trade unions, the number of RCA candidates continued to compare favourably. Only larger unions, (the MFGB with 39; the

Extractions: "The one supreme task today of the Trade Union Movement must be to win the war. The alternative to that would mean the complete annihilation of all the freedom of the present and all hope for the future." F.C. Watkins JP MP President RCA, 1940 Annual Conference. At 11.00 hours on Sunday 3rd September 1939, when MPs were assembling in the Commons, they knew that if the Government's ultimatum to Germany to withdraw its troops from Poland had not been obeyed, the nation was at war. At that very moment an air-raid warning sent them to the gas proof shelters, but they were quickly released and, at 12.00 hours, were told by the Prime Minister, Neville Chamberlain, that both France and the UK were at war with Germany. Soon afterwards, the RCA 's head office at 25, Euston Road was transferred from London; the membership records and the accounts staff went to Rock, near Wadebridge, Cornwall, and the remainder were based at Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire. The Government took control of Britain's railways on 1st September 1939, with the companies responsible for managing the day to day business as before, but under the overall policy of the Railway Executive Committee (REC). The chairman was Sir Ralph Wedgwood who had been General Manager of the
