La piattezza del film è per la maggior parte colpa sua, non tanto della sceneggiatura - che evita per molta della sua durata l'eccesso melenso e retorico che ci si poteva aspettare vista la trama. Costato 13 milioni di dollari - noccioline per uno Studio di Hollywood - il film soffre forse della volontà di Fisher di voler parlare al pubblico più vasto possibile, guardandosi quindi bene dall'avere un sotto-testo che possa creare problemi allo spettatore disattento, dei dialoghi e delle situazioni ricercate e soprattutto un minimo di analisi sociologica diversa dal prevedibile "poverino, quante glien'ha fatte passare la società". E non ci risparmia un finale hollywoodiano come se ne sono visti di rado, ultimamente.

La gradevolezza generale poi ne fa un film ancora più debole, senza la forza che avrebbe dovuto dimostrare, e le scene dei combattimenti fanno rimpiangere lo Scorsese di Toro Scatenato. Inutile per "la difesa dei diritti e della giustizia" per la sua ottusità implicita, non imperdibile se si vuole passare una serata quieta.
