Extractions: by Daryl Lee This German composer has inspired more literary output than any other composer in history. In his own lifetime, he was the topic of over 10,000 books and magazine articles. He was himself prolific in literary genres other than opera, having written 230 books and articles of his own. What was it about him that so attracted critics and admirers alike? Wagner was born to opera. His parents were in a theatrical company, so the dramatic environment seemed very natural to him. He studied music, but taught himself composition by studying opera scores and Beethoven symphonies. Rejecting the pattern set by the Italian and French composers and followed by Mozart, Wagner set his operas in German. Instead of a sequence of arias programmed to elicit applause, he invented the form of leitmotif.

Extractions: Education ... Music History 102 This collection All of the IPL Advanced From an early age, Wagner had been interested in theater, drama, verse, and acting. While in his teens he became interested in music, and began studying and composing. His greatest inspiration came from the operatic reforms and ideas of Gluck , and from the German operas of Carl Maria von Weber . By the age of twenty-two, he had finished his first opera and had begun to make notes for his autobiography. Convinced of his greatness, he continued composing and conducting, but meeting with little success. Eventually he became involved with the Dresden revolutionary uprising of 1849, the outcome of which made him a wanted political criminal, and he fled to Switzerland. During this time Wagner was continually composing operas and finding his mature style. He envisioned the creation of the "total art work": a conception of a music drama based on classic Greek prinicples, in which there would be a unity of music, drama, text, design, and movement. The subject matter of these works were to be the indigenous myths and legends of the German people, such as the famous

Extractions: Richard Wagner (1813 - 1883) Most descriptions of Wagner the man do not paint a pretty picture. There are many reports of his extreme anti-semitism, massive ego-mania, wanton gambling and womanising, and his ruthless exploitation of anyone in order to achieve his ambitions. While these character traits severely taint any biography of Wagner, let's put them to one side, describe the key events in his life and concentrate on his musical development and his place in musical history. Wilhelm Richard Wagner was born in Leipzig, and it is thought that his real father was not the man who gave him his surname (Karl Friedrich Wagner who died when Richard was 6 months old) but the actor Ludwig Geyer who was then to become Wagner's stepfather and influence his early development. Geyer knew the composer Weber, but it was his literary interest that drew Wagner initially towards Classical and Shakespearean drama. The young Richard was called Richard Geyer, but reverted to Richard Wagner a few years after the death of his stepfather, by which time he had discovered the world of music and Beethoven in particular. Wagner received very little formal musical education, yet with complete self-absorption threw himself into a musical career which involved conducting posts in opera houses while composing operas with his own libretti, frequently based on stories from German mythology. He was later to form a friendship with Nietzsche, with whom he shared certain ideas (some misguided certainly) including a desire to base writings on timeless allegorical myths.
