Invoking the ecstatic spirit of non-Western religious tradition, John Coltrane opened the eyes of the jazz world to a new spiritual potential. Jazz, a music driven by rhythm and extended improvisation, was a medium ideally suited to the exploration of mystical ideas only partially communicable through the spoken word. The social revolution of the 1960s called into question the whole function of music in a social and cultural framework. The rebellious youth culture sought in music an outlet for expression freed from the rules and boundaries set by previous generations. A newly self-aware African-American community sought in music a reconnection to African roots and heritage, as well as the forging of new cultural identities. And finally, dissatisfied by religious institutions that seemed ossified and abstract, millions undertook a spiritual quest, exploring the ideas of religions and philosophies from around the globe, especially those that offered the intensity of religious ecstasy combined with the tranquility of meditation. The Quarterly Review stood politically for preserving the status quo. The journal was very hostile to the work of writers in favour of political reform. Writers such as Percy Bysshe Shelley, Leigh Hunt, William Hazlitt, thomas Babington Macaulay and Charles Dickens all received hostile reviews in the journal, whereas the work of Jane Austin and Sir Walter scott was warmly praised. It was alleged that John Wilson Croker's savage review of John Keat's Endymion contributed to the poet's early death. The Quarterly Review ceased publication in 1967.

I've written a short history of KSU which you can read by clicking on KSU History I live in Marietta with my wife Kathy in a 1920s house that is part of the Atlanta Street-Frasier Street National Register district. In the early 1990s the district was placed in the National Register of Historic Places. VITA Fortunately, I finished my graduate work just at the time that Kennesaw began to offer upper level courses. The Board of Regents in 1976 converted us into a senior college, with the stipulation that we spend two years preparing for the transition from junior to senior status. The first upper level classes were offered in 1978. Georgia History was not one of the original courses offered after the transition. But due to a request from the teacher preparation program, we began to offer the new course in 1979. For the next decade or so, I was the only KSU faculty member to teach Georgia History. Click on

Scott also played a significant role in the use of rail travel for the Union war effort during the Civil War. Scott was born on December 28, 1823, in Fort Loudon, Pennsylvania (some sources say London, Franklin County, Pennsylvania). He was the seventh child born to Thomas Scott and had four younger siblings. His mother was Rebecca Douglas Scott. Scott's father ran a tavern, Tom Scott's Tavern, which was located in Franklin County on a turnpike between Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. It served as a stop for stagecoaches. Scott's father also ran a stage line.
