Each year 90 to 100 deaths from sting reactions are reported, but many more deaths may be occurring, mistakenly diagnosed as heart attacks, sunstrokes or attributed to other causes. More people die each year from the effects of insect venom than from spider or snake bites. Extreme human sensitivity to stings resulting in serious or fatal reactions is confirmed almost entirely to cases involving bees, wasps, hornets, bumble bees and ants (Order Hymenoptera). Unlike most other allergies, insect allergy can cause a life-threatening disruption to breathing and circulatory systems called anaphylactic shock. For one person in 100, the sting of an insect can be fatal. Most people stung will experience a "local" reaction with redness, pain, swelling and some itching only at the sting site. If the reaction progresses quickly to sites other than the sting site or is followed by difficult breathing or choking at the throat, the person is experiencing a "systemic" allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) requiring emergency medical treatment. Remember that if you are stung on the hand and your face begins to swell or hives break out all over your body, this is a serious condition requiring emergency room attention.

Extractions: Chinese scientists have inserted scorpion and moth genes into oilseed rape (canola) plants to make them poisonous to insects feeding on them. The researchers say that using two foreign genes at the same time means insect pests will be less likely to develop resistance to the genetically modified (GM) plants. The findings were published online in Plant Cell Report on 19 July. The researchers tested the GM plants by exposing them to caterpillars of the diamondback moth (Plutella maculipenis) . All of the plants showed some defense against the caterpillars, although the extent of this varied from plant to plant. The caterpillars, which are major crop pests in parts of Africa, Asia and Latin America, have developed resistance to several available pesticides. There are also reports they are becoming resistant to 'Bt' plants, which are genetically modified to produce a toxin that kills insects but is harmless to birds and mammals. The Chinese team, led by Jingxue Wang of the Agri-Biotechnology Research Centre of Shanxi Province, inserted two genes at once to overcome this problem.

The object, known as a backflap, was part of the costume worn by elite members of Moche society, which flourished on the coastal plain of northern Peru from 200 B.C. to A.D. 700. Made of gold, copper, and silver, the backflap weighs about 2.5 pounds and is 25.6 inches long and 19.6 inches wide. Fourteen species or subspecies, belonging to two families, the Buthidae and the Scorpionidae , have been identified.1 Nine of these have been found in the Riyadh area (Table 1). The two most venomous species appear to be Leiurus quinquestriatus and Androctonus crassicauda of the family Buthidae . The physician in the Emergency Department may be unsure of the optimal management after envenomation and there is often a great deal of anxiety on the part of the patient as to the course the illness may take. In certain areas of the Kingdom, scorpion stings result in significant morbidity and even mortality.2,3 Toxicity in Saudi Arabia, however, is variable. Neale reported 205 cases of "scorpion sting syndrome" presenting to the King Fahad Hospital in Riyadh over a five-year period beginning in 1983.4 Significant morbidity was found to be rare and there was no mortality. It was the purpose of this retrospective review to further assess the risk and morbidity of envenomation by scorpion stings in the Riyadh area, to determine whether antivenin therapy would be of benefit in this region of the country. The study is an extension of the review by Neale and encompasses the 10-year period from 1983 to 1992. It is hoped that the data presented will help guide practitioners in the management of patients presenting with "scorpion sting syndrome".
