Extractions: email n.j.brown@sheffield.ac.uk Professor and Head of Microcirculation Research Group Professor Brown was born and educated in Newcastle. She then completed an undergraduate Bachelor of Science degree in Physiology and Pharmacology at the University of Sheffield. There followed a period of postgraduate research in the Department of Physiology, University of Sheffield investigating the role of nutrients in controlling gastrointestinal motility, under the guidance of Dr David Rumsey and Professor Nick Read. This resulted in the award of PhD in 1987. She was then appointed as a Postdoctoral Research Associate in the Department of Biomedical Science, funded by Kabi Invent, Sweden. The research was a continuation of her PhD studies investigating the hormonal and neural mechanisms controlling motility and nutrient absorption. The major research focus of the Microcirculation Research Group is elucidating the mechanisms of angiogenesis (growth of new blood vessels) and development of the tumour microcirculation in cancer progression and developing strategies to inhibit blood vessel growth. Whilst the regulation of angiogenesis initiation and maintenance is well characterised, the mechanisms controlling vascular maturation, remodelling and regression remain largely unexplored especially in humans. Studies targeting the latter stages of angiogenesis are increasing our understanding of the mechanisms involved, which may result in novel treatment strategies for angiogenesis-dependent diseases.

Extractions: Never was there a more dyed-in-the-wool optimist. Despite his failing health, he recently purchased a new electric chain saw in hopes that he might cut wood for their fireplace this winter. He resented being in a retirement home with "all those old people" because he thought of himself as young. He hated being old and fought against becoming dependent on anyone. He died with his personal dignity intact and that is a great gift for us all.

Extractions: 19 January 2005 From: Mary (jools4u@rochester.rr.com)anonymous Just Finished STAY. Great story, well-written, and a beautifully designed book, as well. One jarring note through-out, however, kept pulling me out of the flow of the novel and had me reaching for my blue pencil. Why use the word "swang" when the proper choice would have been "swung?" My on-line searches turned up archaic examples of "swang" as past tense for "swing," and one reference to limited regional use in parts of Northern Ireland and Scotland. Seems to me you must have had some reason for consistent usage that even the most rudimentary spell-check program would have caught. Well? Bloody hell, the choice that wouldn't die. Here's an explanation. For the record, I use "swang" in everyday speech. I'm from Yorkshire; it's the word I grew up using. Aud learnt English in Yorkshire and London. She's an old-fashioned girl. It seemed plausible that she would use the word, too. But, oh, the grief I've had over this. If I had it to do again, yes, I'd substitute the safer "swung." It sounds and feel clumsy to me (like "shined" instead of "shone") but the primary rule of fiction is Don't Bump The Reader From The Story, and clearly, swang does that. From: anonymous I'm sure others have already forwarded this, but just in case - the current URL for Elena's story is http://www.kiddofspeed.com/
