From the start of her career as a young girl only 15 years of age, Stacy James has managed to convince critics, judges, families, and friends from all over the nation, that she has it all. As a little girl dressing up and using a candle as her microphone to perform for her loving family, Stacy proved at an early age that she was a born performer, destined for her place on the stage. Her fame as a vocalist and dancer began when the opportunity arose for her to perform a lead role in her middle school’s singing group, “Pride.” Replacing a girl at the last minute who took ill, Stacy astonished the audience with her powerful, pure voice. The choir director, Julie Sheppard, summed up the event saying, “When Stacy opened her mouth and starting singing, the entire room went quiet and still. No one could believe that voice was coming out of that little body!” Stacy then began to sing all over the Ark-La-Tex area performing at everything from charity events, community gatherings, to churches and clubs. Stacy’s next successful platform was in the pageants. She took her talent, determination, and confidence to the competitions at her young age of 15 years, and after winning Miss Texas High School 1997, went on to win the title of Miss Texas in 2001, and finally, finished as a semi-finalist in the Miss America Contest. She has since made over 375 appearances and performances as Miss Texas, and sang at such prestigious events as the 2002 Cotton Bowl, 2001 Texas Rangers Game, 2002 Houston Astros Game, and several NASCAR events in Ft. Worth, Texas.

On June 1st, 1991, as a junior at the University of Cincinnati, a diving accident left her a C5-6 incomplete quadriplegic - paralyzed from the neck down. In her captivating speeches, she shares her journey of triumph: walking out of rehab on crutches, re-learning to use her disabled hands and weak arms, graduating from the University of Cincinnati magna cum laude, becoming a wheelchair athlete, and winning Ms. Wheelchair Ohio. Athletic Accolades Stacy, the 1999 Ohio Wheelchair Games Outstanding Female Athlete, has won over 75 gold medals for swimming, racing, weightlifting, and wheelchair track and field. In the next 24 hours, my parents were told I would never walk again. I just wanted to move my hands. I played piano and guitar, and had twirled baton competitively. Now, the only things I had left to hold on to were my friends, my family, and my faith. In the Bible God says that once we trust Him He will never leave. Even though I lay there in despair, I knew there was hope because God loved me and still had a purpose for my life. In the dark hospital room, I determined to try my best with God's help to walk again, and serve Him someday with my life. I worked hard, and progress came in small victories: the wiggle of a toe, the tiny move of my finger. I was learning the tough reality that God's promises are the only things that would never disappoint me. You never think these things will happen to you. I was more mortal than I thought. Four months later, I walked out of rehab with arm crutches! I use them now for home and short distances. I enrolled in college, and with my mom's help, started finishing my college education.

It was a three-day event during which about 30 advertising and marketing educators from across the country gathered to hear about trends, issues and other educational matters regarding Yellow Pages advertising, which is now a $30 billion industry and a significant advertising medium for corporate America. Ed Johnson Meg Lauerman Nancy Mitchell was program chairwoman for the Association for Educators in Journalism and Mass Communication convention Aug. 9-13 in Anaheim, Calif. She also was vice head of the advertising division of AEJMC this year. Next year, she will be the head of the 350-member advertising division. Mitchell also was asked to serve on the editorial board of the World Communication journal. Last April, she participated in a panel on distance learning at Central States Communication Association with Stacy James and Jerry Renaud. She also presented a paper on advertising to older adult women at that convention. Jerry Renaud finished his term as president of Nebraska Associated Press Broadcasters and will serve this year in a newly created job of past president.
