Mother And Son His name is alexander sokurov. For those who know how stingy Tarkovsky was It is as if sokurov took the opening scene of alexander Dovzhenko s Earth http://www.horschamp.qc.ca/9809/offscreen_reviews/sokurov.html
Extractions: We should be extremely grateful to the Festival of International Film and New Media's (and its earlier incarnations) for its consistent programming of Alexander Sokurov's films. It is there that over the past several years I have seen most of his features: The Lonely Voice of Man Days of the Eclipse Save and Protect The Second Circle Stone Whispering Pages (1993) and Mother and Son Mother and Son for a month from mid-September to mid-October. Having said that, no one should have any excuse for missing one of the greatest film experiences of the 1990's. The anticipation of a seeing a Sokurov film has me torn between hushed excitement and outright yelling because I know that he will take me places few directors dare go. For years, Sokurov had been touted as the heir apparent to Andrei Tarkovsky as Russia's film master. Indeed, Sokurov was Tarkovsky's prized student at the Moscow Film School (VGIK), and in one of his final interviews Tarkovsky said of him, "You see, in Leningrad there is a young director, a cinematic genius. His name is Alexander Sokurov." For those who know how stingy Tarkovsky was with his accolades, that is an impressive complement. Though Sokurov acknowledges Tarkovsky as a major source of inspiration (and has also made a documentary on Tarkovsky entitled Moscow Elegy in his Elegy series), he is quick to refute much of a direct influence. As he has said, "I would say that we had a very close friendship rather than collegial collaboration" (Film Comment, Nov.-Dec., 1997, p. 23). I can see where he would want to create some distance between himself and Tarkovsky, but there still are many aesthetic (formal rather than thematic) parallels between them.
Extractions: "Your outstanding and extraordinary works deserve more than wide recognition amidst critics and professionals," the president's press service cites his message as saying. "The point is, you have found an audience that is capable of appreciating the sophisticated skill you demonstrate while exploring the depths of a human soul and understanding that sincerity and loyalty to your artistic principles are more essential to you than commercial success." Sokurov is the author of 25 documentaries and 12 feature films. One of his recent creations, Moloch, won the Grand Prix of Russia's 10th Kinotavr Film Festival and a Best Scenario award at the Cannes festival in 1999. Alexander Sokurov holds many Russian and international awards and prizes.

"Ah, the Grim Reaper," says an unlikely character in Moloch (1999; March 9 at 8:45 p.m.), a highlight in the Alexander Sokurov retrospective at the Harvard Film Archive. "The plague will soon exist no more. Well beat death." The speaker is Adolf Hitler (Leonid Mozgovoy), the 20th centurys own Grim Reaper, and the words might be seen as a self-fulfilling prophecy of his own demise. But Sokurov might have a deeper, more disturbing meaning in mind, the idea that even the murderer of millions might have committed his atrocities as a twisted way of affirming life. As such, he seems to suggest, Hitler is an artist, because art is humanitys way of vindicating life and preparing for death in the face of ultimate extinction. The preferable artistic method, of course, would be something akin to Sokurovs own. Obsessive, hypnotic, ponderous, and funereal (seven of his efforts include "Elegy" in the title), his films move with the slow rhythms of prayer, with few of the sudden, often glorious epiphanies achieved by his mentor, Andrei Tarkovsky, but with a gathering darkness and sense of inevitability befitting his subject. His tone is more detached grief than clammy terror, as he probes not so much the dread of personal extinction as the devastation caused by the loss of others, the fear of being left behind. These are fitting works in this period of grief where in

Extractions: Comments/Inquiries Medium Film Keywords Caregivers Death and Dying Grief Loneliness ... Time Summary A young man (Alexander Anaishnov) has come to take care of his mother (Gudrin Geyer) who lives alone in rural Russia. She is dying. He watches her sleep, takes her for a walk (or rather carries her), reads to her, gives her medicine, and, when she falls asleep, goes for a walk alone. He breaks down and weeps, then returns to his mother, who may still be sleeping or may now be dead. Commentary This beautifully observed film shows us a young man caring for his dying mother. The green countryside, thunderstorm threatening, through which he carries her forms a powerful counterpoint to the darkness and simplicity, but evident warmth, of her cottage. We almost envy the mother, cared for and loved, whereas the son's loneliness as he watches over and grieves for her, the roles of mother and child reversed, is heartbreaking. The film seems to take place in close to real time. For instance, when he watches her sleep, we watch, too, silently, for as long as it takes. When he carries her outside for a walk, we follow what seems to be the entire progress. As a result, the film is slow and will certainly try the patience of some, but it also captures something important about caring for the dying: the slow passing of time when death has become inevitable but will not be hurried along. As we watch the young man watching his mother, we feel with him that every minute is at the same time both precious and excrutiating.
