Press Releases contest between rival candidates Billy Kay and tony slattery. local broadcaster Billy Kay and comedian tony slattery braved an evening of strident http://www.dundee.ac.uk/pressreleases/slattery.htm
Extractions: The first rectorial election for six years was an exciting occasion - not least because it was a hotly-fought contest between rival candidates Billy Kay and Tony Slattery. After a whirlwind day of wooing students everywhere from the library to the art college and the Tav Bar, local broadcaster Billy Kay and comedian Tony Slattery braved an evening of strident heckling from a student body determined to weed out any weaklings. The pair faced questions and insults on everything from tuition fees to dress sense, coping with the onslaught with considerable aplomb - but in the end it was the wit, humour and celebrity status of Tony Slattery that won the day. With the quick responses that characterised his appearances on the popular television series Whose Line is it Anyway the comedian silenced his critics and pledged to represent students with all his heart and soul. Although local man Billy Kay showed a more intimate knowledge of the University and student issues Tony Slattery convinced the students that his level of commitment, willingness to learn and sheer enthusiasm for the role would compensate for any knowledge he lacked. I dont think that at this stage being a rector is dependent on grasping everything there is to grasp within the first few days - its about precision of thought and the ability to argue the case and win it in the face of opposition, he said. After winning with a comfortable 601 votes to Billy Kays 331, his next challenge is his installation ceremony as rector later this year, when he will be dragged through the streets of Dundee in the rectorial carriage.

Extractions: Carew Park 2 In turning in their best performance of the season Carew Park booked their FAI Junior Cup third round ticket when beating Mungret Regional at the county venue by the odd goal in three. Mungret went close again shortly after when Timmy Reen won possession in his own half and after beating off a number of would-be challenges he found Paddy McNamara whose excellent drive was smothered on the line by the talented Gordon Stewart. The Carew Park backline of Rice, Grehan, Noonan and Dillon were absolutely brilliant as they battled valiantly against the Mungret front line. Jason Collopy, Albert Slattery and Denis Griffin ran themselves ragged as they chased and harried every ball. Mungret, though, took the lead midway through the half. They won a free kick on the edge of the box and Carew had a four-man well in front of it but Alan Finucane somehow turned the ball around the defence and into the top corner past Gordon Stewart giving him no chance. Carew had a glorious chance of levelling when Anthony McCormack crossed first time into the inrunning Paddy Koyce who volleyed goalwards but Tom O'Connell saved the day with a header off the line. O'Connell had a great game for Mungret; so, too, did Derek Cullen, Pat McNamara, Timmy Reen, Dara Droog and goalscorer Alan Finucane.

Extractions: Well done to Wembley Rvs. who gleaned their very first point of the season when they held red hot favourites Carew Park to level pegging after a most entertaining encounter, writes Sean Curtin. Carew Park were, as I said, installed almost unbackable favourites to win this game but they came up against a rejuvenated Wembley who had Dom Considine and Jimmy Collins back at the helm after taking a break at the start of the season. Wembley hadn't won a game all season - they hadn't gone anywhere near doing so either but yesterday they turned in an excellent performance and thoroughly deserved a share of the spoils. They had a chance early in the game when Leo Neenan latched onto John Grehan's intended back-pass but he drove the ball wide of the target. The same player was unlucky later on when he controlled Richard O'Grady's long pass but he rushed his shot and the ball whizzed wide of the near upright. Carew, however, took the lead in the tenth minute when Gordon Stewart's long kick out was controlled by Denis Whelan who laid it off in front of Paddy Koyce who made no mistake with a thunderous shot. Wembley got a great opportunity to level the tie when they were awarded a penalty but Leo Neenan uncharacteristically drove the ball over the crossbar.
