Commonly known by their first names, Larry Moe Curly slapstick comedy. The most familiar Three Stooges lineup, from left to right: Moe, Curly and Larry edit The Stooges got their name and their start in a vaudeville act called Ted Healy and his Stooges . Brothers Harry Moses Howard (Moe) and Samuel Howard ( Shemp ) (original last name Horwitz) were later joined by violinist Larry Fine (real name Louis Feinberg). Shemp left for a career in feature movies (notably as trainer Knobby Walsh in the "Joe Palooka" movies; he also appeared in The Bank Dick with W.C. Fields ). When Shemp left, brother Curly Howard (real name Jerome, or Jerry called "Babe" by family members) took his place. According to Moe Howard in his autobiography, "Moe Howard and his Stooges", Shemp acquired his name from his mother's attempts to pronounce his name, "Sam", in spite of her thick accent. Since they keep breaking leases by cooking in their apartments, they rent a room in a spooky castle that houses not only a wacky professor (played by "the fourth Stooge," Emil Sitka , veteran of many a Stooge short) and his pretty daughter, but a pair of Martians who are waiting for him to perfect his latest invention and use it to conquer the Earth. After an old situation-device in which the craft is too large to leave the workroom, the Stooges make a trip into space that adds nothing to the plot, and finally defeat the invaders by hoisting them on their own petard. Our problem with Mr. Howard? He was OK... but he wasn't his brother Curly For that reason little has been written about one Samuel Horwitz, a.k.a. Shemp Howard, the eldest performing Howard brother of Three Stooges fame. (Moe, Curly and Shemp had two more brothers at home in the Brooklyn enclave of Bensonhurst, though neither professed interest in Stooging as a profession. Regarding the name "Shemp," it came from his immigrant mother, Jennie Horwitz, who in struggling with "Sam!" often blurted out "Shem!") Shemp Howard would have turned 100 in 1995, a year that also marked the 40th anniversary of his passing in the back seat of a Los Angeles taxicab. Legend has it Shemp was returning home from a fight card at the Hollywood Legion Stadium, when he pitched over dead with a smoldering Havanaclenched between his jaws. Or so goes one version.

Coming off the recent success of THE THREE STOOGES MEET HERCULES (released the same year), the film made for cheerful kiddie matinee fodder and an entertaining entry for fans to enjoy year after year. Although Moe and Larry were up there in years by this point and the antics were less violent, the film still delivers plenty of slaps and classic Stooge camaraderie. And despite the original poster art, the Stooges don't wear space helmets in the film! Playing themselves as bumbling TV stars, The Three Stooges (Moe Howard, Larry Fine and Curly Joe DeRita) get thrown out of their apartment for... cooking! His plans are thwarted by a duo of Martians named Ogg (George N. Neise) and Zogg (Rayford Barnes) who want to obtain the weapon/vehicle for their own planet, and they also intend to destroy the earth. Of course, the Stooges baby-sit the invention, end up destroying a military base, and accidentally launch it in the sky for some zany adventures. When it later gets in the hands of Ogg and Zogg, it's up to the Stooges to stop their evil intentions in time to prevent their cartoon TV program from being canceled.
