Reno News And Review Music Review - March 21, 2002 Joker s Wild is singer lori Libbee, baasist Alan Rippey, guitarist Tim Burke Lead singer lori Libbee strutted and danced in a dress that looked like it http://www.newsreview.com/issues/reno/2002-03-21/music.asp
Extractions: When you go out to see a local band, what do you want to see? Another way-too-hip lineup of art school dropouts? More brooding lyrics from a guy wearing too much makeup? A wall of out-of-tune feedback? Or do you want some rock 'n' roll that you can sing along with, played by a band that's (heaven forbid) having a good time? That's what Joker's Wild brings to the Reno scene. Joe Bob's Roadhouse in Carson City was buzzing with after-dinner conversation on a recent Friday night. On the stage, Joker's Wild was laying down blues and classic rock, keeping things mellow. Lead singer Lori Libbee strutted and danced in a dress that looked like it was made of flames. The band's guys all wore black T-shirts with a joker's head on them. People tapped toes and bobbed heads, feeling low- key, comfortable. That didn't last long. With an opening riff that fires up anyone who lived through the 1980s, Joker's Wild launched into a rockin' version of "You Gotta Fight For Your Right." From there on out it was party time. Georgia Satellites and Brownstone Station, Nirvana and the Fabulous T-Birds, Black Crowes and Lenny Kravitz were all rendered in a roadhouse blues tone. They even played "Roadhouse Blues."

Four qualities are evaluated in each restaurant, hotel or airline awarded the distinction: good taste, maintenance of the premises, quality and service. Having won the award in the past is no guarantee, as the review is done anonymously. "It cant be done' is not in the vocabulary of the winners," said Mr. Schwartz upon presenting the award. The real artists are those in the kitchen. And the award belongs to all the staff, as it is a joint effort. Lori Carson lovers and the murky netherworld below lie the evocative songs of singer loriCarson. The band on Where It Goes supports the singer discreetly, http://www.well.com/~julene/recrev/lori.html
Extractions: When spring fever sets in, the blood churns and ripens for love right on cue. But there's more to this collective giddiness than flowers in riotous bloom and lovers walking paths strewn with whispered promises. Spring is also a pale wad of tangled grubs scurrying beneath the feet of starry-eyed couples, the underbelly of romance working busily at luring lonely hearts into doomed love affairs. Nestled somewhere between the sweaty palms of new lovers and the murky netherworld below lie the evocative songs of singer Lori Carson. Her second solo album, "Where it Goes," balances a yearning for true love with a nihilistic certainty that romance can never rescue her from the past. The song "Petal" finds her musing throatily, "So many times I thought/ Hey this is it/ I'm ready let's go baby/ But it all led nowhere/ Turned out wrong/ And I still believe in it/ But not much." Carson's voice has a rawness beneath its soprano highs that make her songs resonate and tremble she's an unaffected singer who sounds like the bitter kid sister Joni Mitchell never had. Thankfully, the sweetness of her voice is seldom cloying; she knows to use it sparingly so as not to gum up the lyrics' genuine emotion with sentimental goo. As vocalist for the Golden Palominos an ever-shifting group of players led by percussionist Anton Fier Carson contributed to 1993's "This is How it Feels" and last year's "Pure." But where master-tinkerer Fier favors lush arrangements and layers of effects for the Golden Palominos, his production here shows admirable restraint. The band on "Where It Goes" supports the singer discreetly, giving her songs room to breathe. The result is an album that lingers after the last song ends, the pure notes shimmering in the air like a flash of long-forgotten memory.

Extractions: Conditioned Ethical Blindness Peter Singer Excerpted from Animal Liberation: a Graphic Guide , London, 1987, pp. 78-80 How can otherwise decent citizens do these things? How can they become so insensitive to what they are doing? Don Barnes, who spent sixteen years as a biomedical scientist experimenting on animals, and now heads the Washington, DC office of the National Anti-Vivisection Society, calls the state in which he used to do his work 'conditioned ethical blindness'. From his early years growing up on the farm, and continuing into his time as a Ph. D. student, Barnes accepted the idea that non-human animals exist to serve human purposes. As a student of psychology, he was also taught a whole new vocabulary which served to distance the experimenter from the animal. The monkeys on which he worked became 'research subjects'; the electric shocks he gave them were called 'negative reinforcement' and their vain efforts to escape were classified as 'avoidance behaviour'. As Barnes says: 'During my sixteen years in the laboratory the morality and ethics of using laboratory animals were never broached in either formal or informal meetings prior to my raising the issues during the waning days of my tenure as a vivisector'. Don Barnes is not the only one to have escaped his conditioning. In 1977 the magazine
Extractions: Proving the Obvious Peter Singer Excerpted from Animal Liberation: a Graphic Guide , London, 1987, pp. 80-81 When presented with examples of mindless animal experiments, scientists usually claim that we, as lay-people, do not understand the importance of their work. But the fact is that, like Ulrich's, many animal experiments are performed merely to prove the obvious. Nowhere is this more true that in experimental psychology. Among the best-known psychology experiments are those of H. F. Harlow, who in the late 1950s began a series of maternal deprivation experiments at the University of Wisconsin Primate Research Centre. The first experiments involved the separation of a baby monkey from her mother in order to study 'the nature of love'. Harlow devised fake 'monkey mothers', one made of cloth and one made of wire. Not surprisingly, all infants showed a preference for the more comfortable, cloth-covered 'mother'. Harlow concluded that comfort has a role in the formation of bonds between infants and their mothers. Harlow and his colleagues the proceeded to modify the surrogate mothers in order to produce bizarre behaviour in infant monkeys: [F]our surrogate monster mothers were created. One was a shaking mother which rocked so violently that the teeth and bones of the infant chattered in unison. The second was an air-blast mother which blew compressed air against the infant's face and body with such violence that the infant looked as if it would be denuded. The third had an embedded steel frame which, on schedule or demand, would fling forward knock the infant monkey off the mother's body. The fourth monster mother, on schedule or demand, ejected brass spikes from her ventral surface, an abominable form of maternal tenderness...
