The calculated "situations" that Pauly puts himself into are very transparent, but they don't detract at all from the comedy. His Mexican sidekick Marlon for example is perfectly cast, though a little bit stereotypical. Actually almost everybody is, such as the heavy-set "food guy" and the sexy "assistant". Nevertheless, I am recommending this show, if you have time to watch it. There were real gems in the two episodes that I watched over the weekend. Somebody needs to create a fan site for Marlon Hernandez! I'm actually warming up to the fact that Pauly is trying to establish his mother as a secret figure who watches over him on the show that he only talks to over the phone, like Charlie in Charlie's Angels. I'm pretty sure its not even her voice that they use. At any rate, it looks like this is a keeper for me this Summer. Extractions: Pauly Shore is Dead (January 3/05) It seems fairly obvious what Pauly Shore is trying to do with Pauly Shore is Dead . The film is packed with put-downs and insults directed at both Shore and his career, to the extent that it becomes clear almost immediately that Shore is trying to distance himself from the Weasel (his comedic alter-ego). But despite a surfeit of celebrity cameos (even Sean Penn makes an appearance!), the simple fact is that Pauly Shore is Dead just isn't very funny. Even Shore's supposed embarrassments, including Encino Man , had more hilarity to offer than this. The film has been structured as sort of a faux-documentary, though there's no doubt that everything in the movie is staged. The story kicks off when Shore's eponymous Fox sitcom is cancelled after only one airing, forcing the actor to re-examine his career (particularly given the critical and financial failure of his last movie, Bio-Dome ). He gets a little help from his guardian angel, who just happens to be the ghost of Sam Kinison (voiced by Craig Gass). Kinison advises Shore to kill himself, with the idea being that his popularity will increase once he's not around anymore. After he supposedly does the deed, Shore discovers that Kinison was right - the problem being that Shore didn't actually go through with it, and now it's just a matter of time until somebody finds him out. Pauly Shore is Dead marks Shore's directorial debut (he also co-wrote the film's screenplay with Kirk Fox), and in terms of imbuing the movie with a fly-on-the-wall kind of feeling, the budding filmmaker has undoubtedly succeeded. The inclusion of all these celebrities occasionally feels excessive, though there's no denying that there are a few very funny moments to be had because of it (ie a hilarious sequence in which Pauly and a friend stumble upon early '90s novelty act Gerardo selling oranges by the side of the road).

Opening Statement Facts of the Case After achieving a certain degree of fame on MTV in the early 1990s, Pauly "The Wiezel" Shore had his first major film role in 1992's Encino Man . Pauly then starred in one film a year until 1996, at which point the box office turkey Jury Duty killed his film career. The following year he signed up for Pauly , a sitcom that was pulled from the Fox schedule the morning after it premiered. The failure of that show provides the impetus for Pauly Shore Is Dead , which opens with Pauly and his friends as they've gathered to watch the premiere episode. Pauly gets a call from his producer the following morning informing him that the show has been pulled in favor of When Animals Attack ; dejected and desperate, Pauly tries to get a meeting with MTV executives, but is promptly thrown out of the building. He soon loses his house and his girlfriend, and is forced to move back in with his mother. He is visited by the spirit of the late Sam Kinison, who just happens to be his guardian angel. Sam tells Pauly that it's better to be a dead somebody than a living nobody, so Pauly tricks the world into believing he has committed suicide. Pauly plans to lie low for a while, then return and take advantage of the good will everyone throws his way after his demise, but a young girl and a liquor store clerk recognize him and rat him out. Pauly's friends, family, and fans resent him for the ruse, and Pauly is arrested and sentenced to prison for stealing the corpse used in his fake suicide. It's during his incarceration that Pauly decides to get serious about his craft.

But, I did so under false pretenses. Someone, who shall remain nameless but who owes me $2.50 told me that that Pauly Shore Is Dead was actually a black-documentary where a "fake" film crew tells honest to goodness celebrities that Pauly has died and then captures their reactions an film, many of which are harsh. That would have been fucking brilliant. But, unfortunately, all the celebrities are in on the joke, hence it is not so funny. The trip back through time starts off by with his inexplicable meteoric rise to fame and fortune. For those who don't know, Pauly's mom owns either the Comedy Store or the Laugh Factory (I forget which and I don't care) in Hollywood. So, from an early age, he was around big time talent. His mother even let Sam Kinison baby-sit young Pauly once (what I would not have given...). Then Pauly gets his big break on MTV as the brain-dead stoner idiot, "The Wiezl." Then he stars in a half-dozen utterly shitty movies. I mean, I only have one good eye left
