    Extractions: All the previous 11 colored" regiments had been raised principally from freed slaves in occupied areas. Shaw went about the organization of his command, recruiting free blacks from all over New England and some from beyond. The regiment was mustered into service on May 13, 1863, with Shaw as its colonel, and was sent to the South Carolina coast to take part in the operations against the cradle of secession, Charleston. After leading the regiment in smaller actions on James Island, at Legaresville on July 13, and Secessionville on July 16, Shaw moved the regiment over to Morris Island. On July 18, 1863, he led the 54th, in conjunction with two brigades of white troops, in an assault on Confederate Battery Wagner. In the unsuccessful charge, the black troops proved themselves to be fully capable of standing up to enemy fire but lost about one quarter of their men, including Colonel Shaw. The rebels in the battery were so outraged by the Union commanders arming blacks that they decided to insult the white officer by burying him in a common grave with his black enlisted men.     Extractions: Robert Shaw Renowned as America's greatest conductor of choral music, Mr. Shaw went to Atlanta in 1967 to become Music Director and Conductor of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. During his 21 years in that capacity, the ASO grew from a part-time, part-year regional ensemble to become a full-time, year-round orchestra, recognized internationally for its excellence. He led it on tours across the United States, including a 1971 Carnegie Hall debut that became the first of many ASO appearances in that prestigious space. He took the ASO and its Chorus to Washington in 1977 to perform at the Inaugural Concert for President-elect Jimmy Carter, and he led both ensembles on an acclaimed concert tour of Europe in 1988. The 200-voice Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Chorus and the smaller ASO Chamber Chorus were his creations. Both were trained to the perfection he demanded and continue to be an important part of the ASO's musical programs at home in Atlanta on a regular basis and occasionally on tour as well. The excellence of the ASO Chorus under his direction has been recognized by six Grammy awards for Best Choral performance and by the Georgia Governor's Award in the Arts. Retirement as the ASO's Music Director in 1988 did not bring any lessening of Mr. Shaw's musical activities. As he cut back on his ASO conducting appearances, he was freed to accept more guest engagements and to focus on realizing a cherished dream, the Robert Shaw Choral Institute.

Contact Us Robert Gould Shaw and the 54th Regiment Memorial Beacon and Park Streets (Boston Common) The Robert Gould Shaw Memorial was built in 1897 in honor of the Massachusetts 54th Regiment , the first all-Black regiment recruited in the North to fight for the Union army during the Civil War . Bravely, skillfully, and honorably the men of the 54th Regiment led the valiant attack on Fort Wagner, SC, on July 18, 1863. Amidst the carnage on that fateful day emerged many stories of valor and patriotic devotion that proved to the nation the uncompromising courage of African-Americans in the battle for American Liberty. Colonel Robert Gould Shaw, for instance, was only 25 years old when he died along with over 270 of his men at Fort Wagner. Sargent William H. Carney, an African-American man from New Bedford, MA, crawled through the bullets and gun fire, death and destruction, while wounded, to rescue the Union flag. For his bravery, Carney became the first African-American in history to receive the Congressional Medal of Honor in 1900.

    Extractions: To write a tribute to Robert Shaw, moreover to make some attempt to convey a sense of the meaning and significance of his life and contributions in so small a space, is a daunting task. His name stood for excellence in musicmaking in general and choral music in particular over the course of a very active career spanning some 60 years. Some of the well known and documented achievements include: first conductor to receive a Guggenheim Fellowship; the Ditson Award for service to American music; honorary doctorates from 13 colleges and universities; a Kennedy Center honoree; Musical America's Musician of the Year; and recipient of the first gold record for a classical recording that sold over one million copies. Robert Shaw was one of the greatest musicians this country has produced. As the 20th century came to a close, his name was included with those of Leonard Bernstein and Aaron Copland as having enormous impact on the shaping and encouragement of creative musical endeavor in the United States. Certainly, the highpoint in the 28 seasons of The Hartford Chorale was the week that Shaw spent with us in March 1989 All participants - and all listeners present at the performance- will never forget the experience of singing the Brahms A GERMAN REQUIEM under his baton. I have the deepest gratitude for his sharing and reinforcement during our private visits that week.

    Extractions: The Art Quilt The art quilt grew out of the great quilt revival that began in the 1960s and continues undiminished to the present day. Interest in handcrafts of all kinds was a strong element of the youth rebellion of the 1960s, as young people across the country sought alternatives to a society they perceived as spiritually bankrupt and morally corrupt. Back-to-the-landers sought meaning in the simpler lifestyles of early America, and taught themselves the traditional nineteenth-century arts that had been rejected by their parents and grandparents as hopelessly old-fashioned. They rediscovered and elevated neglected older craftspeople who still remembered how to make things by hand, and where the craftspeople were unavailable, taught themselves by direct study of surviving objects or long out-of-print how-to books. Interest in quilts and quiltmaking exploded in the years leading up to the Bicentennial, as women reclaimed a heritage that had been largely lost in the profound societal changes that followed World War II. Feminist historians began to reexamine the role of women in American society and art and pointed with great pride to the forgotten work of their foremothers. For the first time, quilts were read as social documents, embodying the history and values of their otherwise silent makers. Old quilts became collector's items, valued for their craftsmanship, design, and history, and thousands of women (and a few men) began to learn how to make quilts again. Many recalled a grandmother or other relative who had quilted, and also found in quiltmaking a way of discovering their personal and family roots as well as a collective past.
