Extractions: BellaOnline's Comedy Movies Editor Murphy Brown: The Complete First Season - DVD Review It was a real pleasure reviewing the 'Murphy Brown: The Complete First Season' 4-disc DVD set. The show was created by Diane English (My Sister Sam). The writing talent in this series was so phenomenal, the show earned 11 Emmy nominations and won four Emmys in its first season alone. The show was an incredible blend of talent. The series premiered on November 14, 1988 and ran through 1998. Murphy Brown was CBS' most successful, long-running series during that time. Each main character was very strong and very funny in their own right. Candice Bergen (Murphy Brown) was the icing on top of the cake. She portrayed Murphy in such a way that you forget she was just an actor in character. Other incredibly talented actors in this cast include Faith Ford (Corky Sherwood); Pat Corley (Phil); Charles Kimbrough (Jim Dial); Joe Regalbuto (Frank Fontana); Grant Shaud (Miles Silverberg) and the late Robert Pastorelli (Eldin Bernecky), who passed away in March 2004. The DVD includes a leaflet with information on each episode, including air date, show description and disc location. Extras on the DVD include audio commentary by Candice Bergen for the pilot episode. Also included is audio commentary by Diane English (Creator/Executive Producer) on the episode titled 'The Summer of '77,' also starring Linda Ellerbee. The pilot episode was one of my favorites because it really established Murphy Brown's character. You never would have guessed it was the pilot episode. The writing and acting was so good in the pilot episode, I would have thought it was a veteran television series instead of a pilot. There was no awkwardness in 'Murphy Brown' like some shows exhibit in the beginning when they're trying to get settled in.

EST Marathon 2002 Series A, A CurtainUp Review REUNIONS by Billy Aronson Directed by Jamie Richards with Hope Chernov, Kathrine Leask, Thomas Lyons, grant shaud and Maria Gabriele http://www.curtainup.com/marathon2002a.html
Extractions: Temperatures outside are starting to climb, rain is falling fairly regularly and a new crop of short plays are sprouting at Ensemble Studio Theatre's annual Marathon series. This year marks the silver anniversary of this program and, we might add, the 6th year of our coverage of them. The first series this year has a running time that is somewhat longer than usual for the Marathon. Interestingly enough (and perhaps there is a lesson in this), the shortest is by far the sweetest.

Extractions: This year, E.S.T. celebrates the 24th anniversary of what has become an eagerly awaited late spring New York theater institution, its festival of one act plays. The formal rules are simple: the plays must be new, and short. (The longest usually run about half an hour.) A total of three groupings of plays is offered, each for a run of just two weeks. This year I celebrate my fifth anniversary of covering this excellent program. In honor of that milestone, I'm going to break with tradition and describe them in the reverse order of presentation. You'll see why.

She is a very funny woman but she doesn't mesh w/Candice Bergen. I liked Eldin. I really liked him, and when he left the show it went downhill. The season after Avery was born. The characters simply lost their satiric edge and became either excessively zany or strident in trying to prove something to Dan Quayle (that magnificent arbiter of "family values"). When Miles left. Extractions: MURPHY BROWN U.S. Situation Comedy Since its premier in 1988 Murphy Brown has appeared in the same 9:00-9:30 slot on CBS's Monday night schedule, serving as something of an anchor in that network's perennial battle against the male-oriented Monday Night Football on ABC. The show focuses on life behind the scenes at the fictional television series FYI (For Your Information). FYI is represented as a tough, talk-oriented investigative news programperhaps a little like another CBS mainstay, 60 Minutes . From its beginnings Murphy Brown has established itself as one of television's premier ensemble comedies, exploring life among the reporters, producers, staff, and friends of FYI. But there is no question that, as the title implies, this ensemble is built around its central character. As played by Candice Bergen, Murphy Brown is one of the most original, distinctive female characters on television. Smart, determined and difficult, she does not suffer fools gladly. Her ambition and stubbornness frequently get her into trouble, and she often acts a little foolishly herself. But what sets Murphy apart from so many other female sitcom characters is that when she gets into a ridiculous mess, it is not because she is a woman. It's because she is Murphy. She's a crack reporter, yet manages to get herself banned from the White House during both the Bush and Clinton administrations. When a corrupt judge falls silent during an interview, Murphy finishes grilling himeven though he's dead.
