Extractions: Hip radio comedy fans and theater folks who belong to the cult of Obie-winning playwright/performer David Sedaris must kill to get this book. These would be fans of the scaldingly snide Sedaris's hilariously described personal misadventures like The Santaland Diaries (a monologue about his work as an elf to a department store Santa) seen off-Broadway in 1997. In a series of similarly textured essays, Sedaris takes us along on his catastrophic detours through a nudist colony, a fruit-packing plant, his own childhood, and a dozen more of the world's little purgatories. Book Review: In Naked , David Sedaris's message is pay attention to me. Whether he's taking to the road with a thieving quadriplegic, sorting out the fancy from the extra-fancy in a bleak fruit-packing factory, or celebrating Christmas in the company of a recently paroled prostitute, this collection of memoirs creates a wickedly incisive portrait of an all-too-familiar world. It takes Sedaris from his humiliating bout with obsessive behavior in 'A Plague of Tics' to the title story, in which he is finally forced to face his naked self in the mirrored sunglasses of a lunatic. At this soulful and moving moment, he picks potato chip crumbs from his pubic hair and wonders what it all means. This remarkable journey into his own life follows a path of self-effacement and a lifelong search for identity, leaving him both under suspicion and overdressed.

I would like to publicly admit that I am the ONLY person in the city who started The Time Traveler's Wife and didn't finish it. I have no excuse for this. It was good, and my kinda reading, a sci-fi/romance/fantasy. It was written by fellow Chicagoan, Audrey Niffenegger. It was my bookclub's pick of the month. When I amend this sorry state, you will be the first to know. Until then, I'd like to wholeheartedly recommend Funny in Farsi: A Memoir of Growing Up Iranian in America by Firoozeh Dumas. You'd think this would be a story of American prejudices and acts of kindness and the assimilation of an Iranian family into the American dream that's Southern California, and it is that, in a way. But even more, it's a story of Firoozeh and her dad, who is really not so different from my own bargain-loving, education-pushing Pops. And that's where the charm of this short collection of essays lies.

Besides the poor skin and awkwardness in movement, there is one rite of passage that we must all pass through: celebrity stalking. Stalking is a hobby unlike any other. The hours of research one must put in often renders negligible results, with some stalking purists asserting that any measurable outcome implies un successful stalking. But such controversy only distracts us from our purpose, which is obsessively uncovering any information on the celebrity at hand. But whom to stalk? How to find a celebrity to waste all your time on? Inevitably, the first person one thinks of to stalk is Madonna . This is a very common and very foolish mistake. Stalking Madonna is best reserved for the seasoned professional, someone who has cut their teeth on such lesser luminaries as the Julia Robertses of the world. Madonna is

When "Strangers" first aired two years ago as a piss-take on those weepy "After School Specials" of the '70s, the show tipped the scales with a warped wit rarely encountered on the small screen. Now, signed on for a third season on Comedy Central, "Strangers" remains a trusted outpost for those who find their funny well beyond the standard sitcom fare. At center stage of the show is actress Amy Sedaris, who plays the rumpled chum-pot Jerri Blank. Blank is a former teen runaway who, after a lifetime of prostitution and drug abuse, has returned to high school as a freshman at age 46. With the possible exception of a special trailer park edition of "Cops," "Strangers" is the only place one is likely to encounter someone like Jerri Blank.

Extractions: In the mid-'90s, there was a trendlet in which the North American TV audience was given to believe that some very beautiful women former models, in some cases were wacky, Lucille Ball-esque comediennes. Perhaps due to the fact that Friends Glamour -worthy lacquer with a pratfall or mudpie to the face or [ gasp! ] bad hairdo, but it was all so calculated; the point was less whatever comedic situation had caused the beauties to be prone or muddy or poorly coiffed, and more that we be impressed that they were good sports, game to demean themselves in quite conventional ways for our amusement. Neither Amy Sedaris nor Amy Poehler is symmetrical or stauesque enough to pose much of a professional threat to Shields or Davis. Also unlike Davis and Shields, Poehler and Sedaris are both very, very funny fearlessly so, one could say. In fact, one could say that the comic trademark of both Amys is their total lack of vanity in their pursuit of a laugh.

Amy Sedaris, performer, playwright and sister of writer David Sedaris, is a perfectly sane woman with a twisted persona. Sedaris once posed as a battered woman for an article on beautiful New Yorkers, and she created the cult TV character Jerri Blank, a fortysomething recovering drug addict who returns to high school. (Her forthcoming movie, Strangers with Candy, is based on that Comedy Central TV show). Compassionate toward the misfits she portrays, Sedaris seems to achieve sincerity through make-believe. Were you a good student?

Visit ModernPooch.com for cute doggy pictures and funny dog stories Ever since I was introduced to the first season of Strangers With Candy I have loved the hilariously irreverent, super smart series and especially the offensive, disgusting, adorable and lovable Jerri Blank character (brought to brilliant life by the one and only Amy Sedaris). Amy Sedaris who has more funny bones than regular bones. I said to my friend, "Living in New York and seeing celebrities all the time makes me completely unfazed by them but there are three celebrities that can tongue tie me: Jon Stewart, Bjork and Amy Sedaris." I walked up to her and asked if I could take a picture with her. She sweetly replied, "Oh, sure!" and then pointed at my engagement ring mischeviously and said, "If I can wear that!" Suddenly I became dorkier and more psychotic by the second and replied, "Really?! Of course you can!" while thinking, "OH MY GOD!! WHAT'S HAPPENING?!?!" Then I told her that I love Jerri Blank and she immediately went into character and said, "Oh good, then I'll play Jerri Blank!" Nearly brain damaged with delight, I leaned into her (exuberant nerd face exhibited above), she lifted her mug so the ring was a-sparkling, I took the picture in my characteristic way and when I looked at the viewfinder I saw that she was Jerri Blank. For a second, I was able to hang out with Jerri (and Jonah was momentarily engaged to Jerri). Now with this post, I am also able to immortalize my fervent dorkdom.
