The longevity of Rodgers and Hammerstein's musical has touched generations of people, which was evident at the show's performance at the Wang Center, Wednesday, Sept. 17. "The Sound of Music," which opened in November 1959, takes place in 1938 and is based on Maria Von Trapp's autobiography, "The Story of the Trapp Family Singers." The lead roles included Marla Schaffel, as Maria, who most recently appeared in "Jane Eyre." Burke Moses, as Captain Von Trapp, who played Gaston in Disney's Broadway production of "Beauty and the Beast," as well as Jeanne Lehman, as Mother Abbess, who also starred in Disney's production of "Beauty and the Beast," as Mrs. Potts. Schaffel was very good as Maria, a free-spirited, nun-in-training, who falls for Captain Von Trapp. Her voice hit every note, even though at times it was hard to hear her over the loud orchestra. Moses remained firm even after he is touched by the love of Maria. It is expected that he would become more pleasant after he falls for her, yet this change is hard to notice. Lehman's voice could have been stronger in her duet with Schaffel in "My Favorite Things," and especially in her solo, "Climb Ev'ry Mountain," yet she was still pleasant to listen to and fit the character of Mother Abbess.

Extractions: Our chilaquiles are served with rice and beans, too Sunday, August 21, 2005 Do you have a favorite restaurant that you're loathe to tell others about, because you don't want it to be "discovered"? Us, too. Except we're going to make an exception to our rule and let you in on our little secret which really shouldn't be such a secret, as this long, dark "Old New York" restaurant has been serving the city for the past 40+ years as its oldest Mexican restaurant: El Parador When the topic turned to movies on Friday night over dinner at Blue Hill at Stone Barns , we'd explained our system for rating movies to Alan Jones and Ashley Garrett : "The 40 Year Old Virgin" sounded like at least a two-margarita movie to us, meaning that in order to sit through such a movie and to find its level of humor funny, we needed to first stop at El Parador restaurant around the corner from the Kips Bay Loews and have a couple of margaritas first. ("The Wedding Crashers," featuring Karen's fave Owen Wilson , had also been a two-margarita flick.) Getting the dosage right is key: If the dosage is too low for the film, the viewer will fail to find it funny, and the night is a bust. It's less of a problem to play it on the safe side and opt for a too-high dosage, unless one is prone to falling asleep when one is intoxicated.

It was bound to happen. The best thing that can be said about this event is that Charlotte Bronte's novel will go on unaffected when this bedraggled attempt to make a musical of it is packed up and forgotten. I snapped the disc up, eager to tear off the wrapping and get to the heart of it. It looked promising. The cover has a gloomy Jane against a gloomy backdrop, and one felt confident that inside was a gloomy new work that caught the general air of gloom and foreboding and - gloom. Alas, this show seems on the edge of a nervous breakdown, with every nerve stretched until the emotions threaten to explode. Most of the characters sound in need of a nice warm glass of milk and an early night. The material they are given is portentous, with tum-te-tum lyrics forcing the composer in to a musical corset. The ill-matched words clatter along to unmemorable music. It might be bearable if it were not so boring.
Extractions: Beth Pierce We will surprise you. Come back soon to see how... Beth Pierce is not your average ingénue. She started acting a year ago, and is currently playing Maggie in Theatre Charlotte's production of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof . She imbues Maggie the Cat with all the calculating nuance that Tennessee Williams intended, and does a great deep south accent. Beth's parents are driving down from Pennsylvania this weekend to see her onstage for the first time. We sat down with Beth on one of those can-you-believe-it's-February afternoons, and talked about her newfound talent. Youve only recently begun to act. How did it begin? I had been in retail management for about 5 years, moved to Charlotte with a company, and realized that wasn't what I wanted to do with the rest of my life. I was about 24. Then I got a job waiting tables for the first time, and decided to go back to school at CPCC. I took classes intermittently. I'd take one or two, then wouldn't take any for a semester, then take one or two. Working, taking classes - sociology, which I wasn't excited about; biology, not excited about; psychology, not excited about - all of these classes that I knew I needed to take, thinking maybe it'll lead to something I want to do. Just trying to find what it was that I wanted to pay attention to in detail. Then I said, I'm going to take an acting class just because I want to. It'll be fun. I'm taking all these classes that are a lot of work, and thought, why don't I do something fun?
