Romero Vent'anni dopo "Il giorno degli zombi", Romero resuscita il mito dei non morti da lui stesso creato nel '68 con "La notte dei morti viventi" e proseguito dieci anni dopo con "Zombi". Romero mantiene intatta la sua matrice sociologica profondamente critica (in qualsiasi situazione la specie umana brilla per egoismo e cupidigia), il suo humour macabro (il locale dove la gente si fa immortalare affianco a non morti incatenati), la sua truculenza (il fedele Tom Savini è uno zombi col machete) ma la sceneggiatura non è sempre all'altezza ed evidenzia una sorta di collage realizzato con ritagli di "Mad Max", "Il buio si avvicina", " 28 giorni dopo " e altri. Se a partire da "La notte dei morti viventi" la dimensione metaforica del regista risaltava nella cinematografia dell'epoca e risultava sotterranea ed efficace, ora l'impressione è che, come le sue stesse creature, essa sia giunta ormai in superficie perdendo vigore e spessore. Romero stesso sembra accorgersene e in questo quarto capitolo tenta di rianimare il filone e di ribaltare definitivamente la prospettiva del binomio vivi-non morti, umanizzandoli, riducendoli a vittime del sadismo dilagante e mostrando dettagli di una normale "non vita". Così, tra ex musicisti che non cessano di "suonare", apprendisti pistoleri che imparano a sparare e una coppia che avanza mano nella mano, gli zombi evocano un'insospettabile e sconcertante sensazione di tenerezza.

Luckily for the fans, there are a few that have helped to fill the staple of our zombie diet and at the top of our nutrition chart is "Dawn of the Dead". One of my favorites, and definitely one of my all-time top five horror films is George Romero's “Dawn of the Dead.” I can remember seeing it for the first time as though it were yesterday. Unfortunately, when "Dawn" was released in theaters (1978), I was way too young to go see it , but it was the first video I rented when I bought a VCR. Earlier I had instantly fallen in loved with "Night of the Living Dead," having first seen it on MTV of all places. This was back when MTV was forced to come up with alternative programming, because they only had about 10 videos that they showed a million times a day. On the weekends, they used to run cult movies (Remember "Reefer Madness?" made me want to inhale.) and always played NOTLD right around Halloween. Once I’d saw it, I was hooked on zombies.
