Extractions: The best starting point for what's right and wrong with The Adventures of Tom Sawyer , the new musical based on Mark Twain's novel, are Heidi Ettinger's sets. Ettinger, who also worked on Big River , the 1985 Tony Award winning musical adaptation of Mark Twain's Huckleberry Finn, has given the town of St. Petersburg, Mo. the look of a colorful three-dimensional folk art painting or quilt. The designer clearly intends to echo Twain's portrayal of boyhood life along the Mississippi. A curved wooden ramp resembling a playground slide and a tree that looks like a giant appliqued fly swatter are part of this visual accompaniement for the unfolding adventures of mischievous Tom and his St. Petersburg chums. For the cave scene, the set ingeniously shows both the underground place in which Tom Sawyer (Joshua Park) and his girl friend Becky Thatcher (Kristen Bell) are lost and the town above where the anxious townspeople have mounted an all-out search.
Rent, A CurtainUp Review Rent concerns a year in the life of two roommates, Mark (jim poulos) andRoger (Manley Pope), their friends and lovers, old and new. http://www.curtainup.com/rent.html
Extractions: Rent , Now with Snap, Crackle and Pop The for our re-visit and re-review of Rent is the arrival of *NSYNC's Joey Fatone in the cast. Happily, not only can we report that this pop star is a welcome addition, but also that the show has as much snap in its step as ever and, much to our surprise, has benefited enormously from some evident re-direction and re-staging which makes it, in a number of ways, better han it's ever been. For those, like me, who saw Rent in its early heyday, now well over six years ago, the original cast will always be the definitive one, and especially so with Anthony Rapp's performance as Mark. Mr. Fatone, however, fills Mark's shoes admirably. When singing, it's hard to imagine a better replacement. In the speaking parts (less plentiful but not unimportant, he still leaves a bit more to be desired. Perhaps it is not surprising for someone who made his name as a singer (and dancer); he appears far more comfortable, confident and effective in that mode. The remainder of the current cast includes the same Roger (Manley Pope) I saw three years ago (when I wrote the review which follows below). His is a terrific performance even if his voice lacks the rather remarkable dexterity of Adam Pascal who originated the role. (On the night I saw this performance, the role of Mimi, normally played by Karmine Alers, was performed by the understudy, Antonique Smith, so I can't speak to Ms. Aler's performance.) All of the other major characters acquit themselves well; Mark Richard Ford's rendition of Tom Collins was a standout.

Mary and Greg had three children, all of whom, together with their parents, sang in the church choir. Mary also joined a special group of ladies who worked for years for our senior citizens, providing them with hot lunches and a host of activities. In 1974, Frank Desby , the choir director of Los Angeles (and composer of a Divine Liturgy that bears his name), planned a choir concert tour of Greece. He selected 34 choir singers from all of the state choirs. Four of the 34 were members of the Pantages household! At the 1994 Choir Conference, the Diocese Choir Federation awarded Mary and Greg the George N. George Award for their years of dedicated service to the parish and to the choir. In addition to the choir, where Mary sings almost every Sunday, she can be seen at the annual Food Festival, working and hostessing in her lovely Greek costume, and always with that winning smile. Extractions: Reviewed by John Kenrick This show deserved a far better fate! Whatever its shortcomings, Tom Sawyer had charm, melody, and a genuine professional polish. These are not qualities to be taken for granted on Broadway, especially at a time when artless travesties like Saturday Night Fever and Footloose were able to run for more than a year apiece. Yes, Heidi Ettinger's ravishing sets won a few raves, as well as a Tony nomination. But did anyone mention that these were possibly the most inventive designs Broadway has seen in years? The entire show was set on an undulating floor of bleached wood that included a hill with steps, a slide for the boys, and a central area that became anything from a classroom to a swimming hole. Stylized trees and buildings were added as needed, climaxing in a cave set that had everyone cheering. And Kenneth Posner's inventive lighting was truly sensational, showing every scene (and Anthony Powell's handsome costumes) to the best possible advantage. The Producers . Schlitz's first-ever Broadway effort blended easily with Ken Ludwig's often amusing book, which played some interesting variations on the original story. Sadly, the first act suffered from the episodic style of Mark Twain's novel. It was not until Act Two that the show took on a clear dramatic focus.

Talkin' Broadway Review: Tom Sawyer Joshua Park as Sawyer and jim poulos as Finn are more than capable of setting Starring Joshua Park, jim poulos, Kristen Bell, Linda Purl, John Dossett, http://www.talkinbroadway.com/world/TomSawyer.html
Extractions: The Messrs. Ludwig, Schlitz, Marques, and Ellis have achieved the impossible with The Adventures of Tom Sawyer , the new musical which opened at the Minskoff Theatre last night. They have beaten Disney at Disneys own game. Tom Sawyer , based on the classic novel by Mark Twain, has been brought to the Broadway stage in a joyous, wholesome, literate, and wonderfully realized production guaranteed to dazzle and enchant children and adults alike. Ken Ludwig has provided a theatrically lucid and intelligent adaptation of Twains masterpiece, a book many consider the Great American Novel, without sacrificing credibility to dramatic structure or moral honesty to histrionic preachiness. Don Schlitz has provided music and lyrics so firmly grounded in the American rural experience as to seem songs you learned in childhood, and are here hearing again after being forgotten for too many years. David Marques provides fetching choreography and movement, based on childrens games, simple and instantly understandable. Scott Ellis has taken these elements, added performers capable of personifying the fundamental truths behind the characters and a bit of ingenious staging, and produced the ideal family musical. Tom Sawyer , of course, belongs to Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn, and the two young actors playing them. Joshua Park as Sawyer and Jim Poulos as Finn are more than capable of setting an appropriately enthusiastic tone and carrying this musical without overshadowing the production itself. With the help of the endearing Kristen Bell as Becky Thatcher, the adorably irascible Jane Connell as the Widow Douglas, and Linda Purls touchingly realized Aunt Polly, the story is in very good hands. Also of particular note in an excellent supporting cast is John Dossett as Judge Thatcher and Kevin Durand as Injun Joe.
