They would also travel to areas around the globe (Seattle, Manchester) and profile the burgeoning music scenes. After Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, Nine Inch Nails, etc. became mainstream acts in the early '90s, MTV was playing their videos on a regular basis, not just late nights on Sunday, thus defeating the purpose of 120 Minutes. Around 1993, MTV had a half-hour show called "Alternative Nation" hosted by Kennedy. It was basically a PG version of 120 Minutes. Now, teen bands and rap/rock combos, who actually flaunt that "I wanna be a rock star" image, are all the rage, and MTV is focusing all their energy on them. Matt Pinfield sucked. He acted as though every two-bit punk band he interviewed had just released the greatest album in the history of rock. What a suck-up. I think Dave Kendall was the best host of the show.

Extractions: low-bandwith version Believe it or not, my video for the song "Deliver Me" has actually surfaced on MTV a few times. It debuted last June, as a part of a special called "Under the Radar: Flying Indie." Matt Pinfield hosted the show essentially an exposé on independent music and they showed videos by 20 indie or unsigned artists. Matt Cheplic and Fear Factory in the same programming block... It was pretty bizarre to see it for the first time, actually. To have Matt Pinfield peer into the camera, hundreds of tons of ferocity and knowledge, and talk about me ... it was odd. He even told the story about how me ran into each other at an ATM a few months prior. See what an impression I make?
Altmusictv: MTV's 120 Minutes: Jim Shearer's Interview 120 Minutes Jim Shearer interviews former hosts Dave Kendall and matt pinfield about the history of 120 Minutes matt pinfield (photo credit mtv.com) http://www.altmusictv.com/120/interview.html
Extractions: After 17 years of operation, the cult-classic music-video series, 120 Minutes, closed up shop for good. For the final episode, MTV/2 brought back former hosts: Dave Kendall and Matt Pinfield. After the cameras were turned off, Jim Shearer corralled Dave and Matt and chatted with them about the great legacy they left behind... This weekly gem that originated on MTV and later moved to MTV/2 was the only place you could see videos that didn't cater to the mainstream folks. 120 Minutes was college radio on your television set, and for two hours every week, the world of music seemed to make sense. For that glorious 120 minutes, flashy back-up dancers, bloated rock-star egos, and made-for-TV pop acts were done away with. 120 Minutes was all about the music-and that's how music should be, right? Now I'm not saying that every video shown on 120 Minutes was the greatest thing ever, but it afforded you the chance to discover a band long before anyone else did. If you watched the show from start to finish-despite sitting through some music that you didn't particularly care for-you could always stumble upon a rare treat or two.

Extractions: After Kendall left 120 Minutes in 1992, he was followed by many others over the next 11 years. Some of 120 Minutes' hosts included Lewis Largent, Matt Pinfield (perhaps the most recognizable host), Jancee Dunn, Dave Holmes, Chris Booker and finally Jim Shearer, who began hosting 120 Minutes on MTV2 in March 2002 and continued as host until the last episode on May 4, 2003.
SFburning / Long-View matt pinfield found us and signed us up. That was more real than playing a showcase to a AL matt pinfield is known in America for being a host on MTV. http://www.sfburning.com/long_view.html
Extractions: Long-View is a new band with enough advance warning. Their debut record has been out a while, July 2003, in the UK. British music lovers here in the USA have been hearing good things about this Manchester band for a long time, and probably downloaded many of the tunes. Even though they have been playing for over three years now, only now are they having an American release. It's been worth the wait. The first song "Further" introduces their brand of universal rock to our shores. With Coldplay and Snow Patrol doing well here, it's no wonder that Long-View have been thrust upon the crowded scene. They are played SXSW and impressed just about everyone. I saw them at the Viper Room during their first LA show and they were amazing. The band are Rob McVey (vocal/guitar), Matt Dabbs (drums), Doug Morch (guitar), and Aidan Banks (bass guitar). They are all over England but met up in Manchester in 2001. Some of the songs like "When You Sleep" and "In A Dream" have a more aggressive sound that suggest some of the shoegazer bands. "Still" is an amazing song that sends shivers through my body. It promises, "Good times are coming." This band definitely has what it takes to find an audience. It sounds sincere. They may be for this year what bands like Snow Patrol and Keane were last year. This may be one of the great records that we are still talking about in six months. They seem concerned with making a mark in America. There has already been one successful tour in March and April 2005. They are returning in June with the band Embrace. I spoke to Rob McVey recently.

Extractions: We Talk Outward TV PDA View Full Version : 120 Minutes - with Dave Kendall SirJustinian 02-07-2002, 05:37 PM Anyone else remember watching this in the early '90's? I just discovered 4 VHS tapes with several shows of 120 minutes from '91 that I had in storage. I'm pretty excited about it! I used to watch that show every single Sunday night. It is SO COOL to see all these old shows with all the cool videos that would never see the light of day these days. I've only gone through one of the tapes so far, but so far I've found some good Robyn Hitchcock interviews, and a live acoustic performance of "Birds In Perspex". Plus many other good videos from then, like "Sexuality" Billy Bragg , "The Walk" and "Close To Me" the Cure, "Love Will Tear Us Apart" Joy Division, "London Calling" Clash, and many other goodies. even the world premiere of "Radio Song"! I can't wait to see what else is on the other tapes!
