"I was a running puke, totally into it in a kind of Forrest Gump, 20-miles-a-day kind of way," says the 48-year-old copresident of Nike. Parker started running in high school in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., in the '70s and kept at it as a member of Penn State's track and cross-country teams until he suffered a stress fracture in his foot. "Running shoes at the time were pretty primitive," says Parker, who vowed to make a better shoe. Using the tools of a local cobbler, he began tinkering with shoes, adding different soles and more cushioning. Parker never did create the perfect running shoe back then. But he has come as close as anyone as he wraps up his third year as copresident of Nike, which he joined fresh out of college in 1979. (Then a small firm, Nike valued Parker's passion for running and knack for design more than his political science degree.) Unlike many a fortune 500 executive, Parker spent his formative years not in sales or finance but in design: shaping shoes, experimenting with material, and testing prototypes on his daily runs. He has served as a major creative force, colleagues say, behind Nike's most dynamic inventions: the air-soled shoe, the cross-trainer, the Air Jordans, and now Shox, Nike's latest hot seller. Parker shares the job with former sales guru Charlie Denson, who has decades of "hard business" experience with Nike; Parker brings knowledge of product, design, and marketing. "We both sort of cross over, of course," says Parker, who pitched the dual presidency to Nike CEO Phil Knight a few years ago. When asked about who will replace him, Knight dodges: "Don't be in such a hurry to get rid of me," he says via E-mail.
