BETTIE PAGE: DARK ANGEL focuses on the last three years of her career before she vanished from the Earth. In particular, it focuses on her career with bondage maestro Irving Klaw and the number of short films that she made for him. There is also her screen test for Howard Hughes, a senate investigation and threats against her life. The Howard Hughes episode is particularly funny. We never actually see Hughes, but discover his peeping tom habits when he watches from the wall of his office, as Bettie gets dressed. Throughout all this, Bettie tries to become a famous actress but never makes it. The events finally lead to a downward spiral that ends with her disappearance. First, this is an extremely low budget affair that actually knows how to work that to its advantage. Scenes are shot indoors mostly where there is maximum control. The outdoor scenes are spare at best and make it obvious that there was no budget for extras in this movie. This actually acts as less of a hindrance than you might think. It gives the film a bizarre, insulated quality. The people in the film live in their own offbeat microcosm. For example, there is Irving Klaw, who makes these bizarre bondage flicks, always insisting the girls wear two pair of underwear so nothing accidentally shows up on film. And there is sweet Bettie Page, who thinks that all this exposure will actually help her in her desire to become an actress.
