Extractions: Georgia O'Keeffe was one of the world's greatest artists. She was a leader in New York's modernist movement of the 1910s and '20s, but she would find her inspiration far from the city streets - in the New Mexican desert. G eorgia O'Keeffe loved wide- open spaces. She was born on a dairy farm in Sun Prarie, Wis. on Nov. 15, 1887. By the time she was 14, she knew she wanted to be an artist. When Georgia was 16, she moved to Virginia to formally begin studying art. This would be the first in a series of seemingly endless moves. In 1905, Georgia continued her artistic studies, moving to Chicago to attend the Art Institute. She left Chicago after a bout of typhoid fever, this time heading for New York's Art Students League. Georgia, who could often do more work in a week than other students could do in a month, went through a dry period and stopped painting for a while.

Extractions: W[WAEIL[t K e y w o r d By Georgia O'Keeffe The meaning of a word-to me -is not as exact as the meaning of a color.Colors and shapes make a more definite statement than words.I have often been told what to paint.I am often amazed at the spoken and written word telling me what I have painted.I make this effort because no one else can know how my paintings happen. Ladder to the Moon At the Ranch house there is a strong handmade ladder to the roof and when I first lived there I climbed it several times a day to look at the world all'round -the miles of cliff behind, the wide line of low mountain with a higher narrow flat top. It is very beautiful - tree covered with a bare spot in the shape of a leaping deer near the top. @One evening I was waiting for a friend and stood leaning against the ladder looking at the long dark line of the Pedernal. The sky was a pale greenish blue, the high moon looking white in the evening sky. Painting the ladder in my mind for a long time and there it was - the dark Pedernal and the high white moon - all ready to be put down the next day. @@ 102 Ladder to the Moon,1958.Oil on canvas,40
