Extractions: Crosby, Still, Nash Henry Diltz My first introduction to Laura Nyro was at camp. My counselor played Eli and the Thirteenth Confession over and over. I was the one who never complained. Since I didn't have a stereo at the time (talk about child abuse), time blurs until my best friend got Gonna Take a Miracle . All that great R&B, some familiar favorites ("Gonna Take a Miracle," "Nowhere to Run") along with some new magic ("Monkey Time," "The Bells") had me seeking the originals (Major Lance and the Originals respectively). In college, my roommate asked if I had to play it quite so often. As the years passed, Nyro became one of my favorite artists, and I eventually bought all of her recordings. When she emerged from her performing hiatus, I flew to Boston to check her out at Nightstage and was less than impressed with her onstage persona. She seemed to ignore the audience, totally wrapped up in the music. In retrospect, it is the Laura Nyro I admire so much. The music always came first for her. Laura Nyro died this year of ovarian cancer. She was 49. The tribute album, planned prior to her death, came out earlier than planned, I guess as a response to the shock of her death. I still can't believe she's gone. She left behind more than "one child born in this world to carry on"the legacy of her music is a truly great gift.

She was only forty nine years old. She is survived by her father, her brother and her son. This is a small, personal site and the opinions found here are only mine, although my opinions have been so influenced by the insights and observations of other lovers of Laura Nyro's music, that I cannot now really distinguish and tell them apart anymore. As a result, I also dedicate this site to my friends in the Laura Nyro Conference over at Cafe Utne They tirelessly spread the gospel of Laura Nyro's wonderful music and it is to my own benefit that I am able to participate with them in helping to keep the flame of her music alive and burning bright. And When I Die , Three Dog Night do Eli's Comin ', Barbra Streisand do Stoney End or The Fifth Dimension do Wedding Bell Blues Sweet Blindness and Stoned Soul Picnic , then you have heard a little of her music. Very little, in fact, as her body of work is far more extensive than that of the hits other artists were able to have by recording her songs.

Extractions: Biography Laura Nyro Age: singer, songwriter Considered one of the most important women in rock history, Nyro's introspective ballads combined elements of folk, soul and gospel. She loomed large among her peers and audiences throughout the 1960s and 1970s. Her influence on a broad spectrum of pop can be seen in the artists who had hits with her songs, including the Fifth Dimension, Barbra Streisand, LaBelle and Melissa Manchester. In 1967, David Geffen heard a tape of her and quit his job to become her manager. Nyro's recordings include Eli and the Thirteenth Confession and New York Tendaberry.
Extractions: (CNN) For a time in the late '60s and early '70s, Laura Nyro was probably the most successful songwriter in the world. The late singer's songs "Eli's Comin'," "And When I Die," "Stoned Soul Picnic," "Stoney End" were all over the radio, covered by artists ranging from Blood, Sweat and Tears to Barbra Streisand. The Fifth Dimension, in particular, built a good part of its career on covering Nyro's soul-gospel creations, taking one of them "Wedding Bell Blues" to No. 1 in 1969. On her own, Nyro didn't fare quite as well commercially, but still had the respect of the music business. Her albums "Eli and the Thirteenth Confession," "New York Tendaberry," "Christmas and the Beads of Sweat," and "Gonna Take a Miracle" sold erratically, but were critically praised for their innovative arrangements and Nyro's songwriting versatility.
