Extractions: Something New: Ice Climbing In Crawford Notch State Park, NH Ryan, a fellow geomechanics guy here at UMass, invited me to go ice climbing with him and some friends this January. Although I had never ice climbed before, he assured me that it would be fun and worth the trip. So, I went! There is really no other way to say it....ice climbing just is cool. Climbing up a vertical sheet of ice while being held up by one point on a crampon...that's just cool. We stayed two nights at the UMass alumni outing club cabin. The cabin is only about a ten minute hike from the road and is set in a nice wooded area. It has no running water (in the winter) or electricity but is heated with a wood stove. Day 1: Ryan, Brad and Scott...wait...I mean me. This day we decided to go to Rumney, a place known mostly for its rock climbing. However, when we got there the ice was very questionable. This type of ice is referred to as candlesticked and is not so safe. We decided to leave Rumney and head somewhere else. A shame, because it looked like a good climb if it had better ice. Just a shot of ryan trying to not fall while crossing the crappy ice of Rumney.

Extractions: And smoking a lot. If Stranger's Almanac, the best album by his previous outfit Whiskeytown, was Ryan Adams channeling Gram Parsons, and if his breakthrough, Gold , was classic rock dues, this is his Grateful Dead tribute. The gatefold picture of the dancing bears, flowers, and tea make for a perfect stoner sunset, one that's easy to picture on a nouveau-hippie's T-shirt at the next Bonnaroo. The music features rambling solos with spiky melodies, slow-churning beats, and vague Americana references, built from (mostly) traditional guitars-bass-drum instrumentation. Adams has a real flair for melody. The first single, "Let It Ride," is a by-the-numbers country-rock tune, complete with references to Carolina, Tennessee, and being at the bar until 3 a.m. By-the-numbers until the bridge, at least, when Adams neatly falsettos about parked cars and movie theatres as the melody reaches up and darts back and forth above the churning guitar and drums with a whole new hook. The deftness and casualness make it just seem effortless. On the album closer "Friends," the piano is calming and graceful, beautifully augmenting the guitar fills that add ache to the song. And as with many of his best songs, because the melody just aches, it's inviting and comfortable to attach interpretations and experiences to the rather oblique lyrics ("Like Christmas on a river/ Without a boat or Christmas tree").

Extractions: Weekend Box Office (July 31 - August 2, 1998) THISÂ WEEKEND A broad range of new films marched into the multiplexes over the weekend but none were able to defeat General Spielberg's mighty troops. Saving Private Ryan easily defended its turf atop the box office charts by collecting $23.6M in its second campaign, according to final results. The Tom Hanks starrer dipped just 23% and raised its cumulative total to an explosive $73.4M in only ten days of warfare. Already a winner of critical success, Ryan is well on its way to capturing commercial success as well. Its ten-day launch is already bigger than some other recent $30M+ opening films. The Truman Show posted three-day and ten-day totals of $31.5M/$64.5M, Lethal Weapon 4 was at $34M/$71.7M, and last year's Liar, Liar laughed up $31.4M/$71M. For the new studio DreamWorks, Saving Private Ryan has become its all-time highest domestic grosser in just nine days beating the $61.8M sum of Mouse Hunt . Also, Ryan has already outdistanced the $44.2M of Spielberg's last film Amistad . The World War II epic drama about the plight to save a soldier whose brothers have all died in combat is the first motion picture since The Truman Show to repeat at number one. With a reported budget of $65M, expect

Extractions: Weekend Box Office (August 21 - 23, 1998) THISÂ WEEKEND From the dark of night, New Line's vampire action film Blade drove a stake through the hearts of the competition by opening at number one with $17.1M over the Friday-to-Sunday period, according to final studio figures. Its powerful opening put an end to Saving Private Ryan 's four-week reign atop the box office charts. Sinking its teeth into 2,322 theaters, Blade , starring Wesley Snipes, sliced up a bloody $7,353 average per coffin. Based on the Marvel Comics character, Blade is the story of a half-vampire half-human hero who seeks revenge on his enemy Deacon Frost, played by Stephen Dorff. Blade has given Snipes the best opening weekend of his career edging out the $16.9M debut of U.S. Marshals from earlier this year. The actor has not had a number one film in nearly three years when To Wong Foo, Thanks For Everything! Julie Newmar spent two weeks at the top in September of 1995 . For New Line Cinema, Blade gave the distributor its ninth biggest opening ever. With a reported budget of $45M, Blade had a strong launch considering the R-rated picture was a top choice among teenage boys. New Line has a good history of marketing martial arts and comic pictures to this demographic group. In August 1995

Extractions: Every few years, a filmmaker comes along and makes a big, sprawling, pretentious, ensemble drama about how difficult it is to live in Los Angeles. The filmmaker shows how L.A. is truly a city of angels since its inhabitants are basically emotionally dead, lost souls who either break into eloquent monologues about how lost they are or stare out a window into space. (Occasionally, it's both.) With the exception of Robert Altman's "Short Cuts," these films are more about a filmmaker showing how he or she is still a Meaningful Auteur (Hollywood hasn't turned me into a hack yet, folks!) by attempting to create some existential treatise on loneliness and the loss of human civility. With "Crash," co-writer and director Paul Haggis goes down this same, long-and-winding SoCal road to nowhere. But here's the twist: These Angelenos are a bunch of racists. "Crash" (not to be confused with the 1997 David Cronenberg freak show where James Spader, Holly Hunter and others got aroused by getting into car crashes) is filled not with characters, but with archetypes. There's the cynical detective (co-producer Don Cheadle), who is the first voice we hear when the movie starts. He's the first to point out how La La Land is a warped cultural wasteland. "In L.A., nobody touches you," he utters in the opening Eloquent Monologue.

The earliest conserved feature of this asymmetric gene expression cascade is the left-sided expression of Nodal /K -ATPase activity.
