Extractions: Asta Nielsen as Hamlet Asta Nielsen BY GARY MORRIS Some of the most memorable images from films of the 1930s are based on the idea of strong women who resist, even dissolve, gender boundaries: Dietrich , dressed in a man's suit, offering a rare lesbian kiss in Blonde Venus ; Hepburn convincing us she's a boy in Sylvia Scarlett ; Garbo as a mannish ruler, staring into the camera at the end of Queen Christina . If audiences were not entirely unprepared for such imagery, it was probably because of another star with a single name who was doing the same thing more than two decades earlier. This is not mere speculation; Garbo herself acknowledged the woman who co-starred with her in The Joyless Street , saying "she taught me everything I know." Born in 1881 in Copenhagen, she was largely self-invented, emerging from a working-class background with few prospects beyond achieving her mother's wish that she become a shopgirl. Her theatrical aspirations dovetailed with Denmark's growing women's liberation movement, and as a teenager she entered the drama school of the Royal Theater of Copenhagen, where she became pregnant. Her decision to have her child without being married was shocking at the time but typical of her tenacity and unshakable individualism. In 1902 she began acting on the Danish stage, and in 1910 made her first film

Extractions: 120.

Extractions: "Asta Nielsen is the only female artist in film who can be considered outright as a genius and whose artistic achievements have the unforced quality of natural events. Everyone who has ever enjoyed the pleasure of her friendship knows that she, like all the other real greats in the world of art, is also a significant human being whose exceptional sense of humor and deep wisdom about life are without parallel."

Extractions: Asta Nielsen was one of the great stars of European cinema. She began in 1910 in the Danish film industry, already world leaders in adult-themed dramas. When Germany came to the fore, she became an institution there as well. Her films are little seen outside of Europe, though the Pacific Film Archives ran a retrospective a few years ago. One film which is available is Nielsen fascinating portrayal of the title role in the world's strangest version of Hamlet (1920). She was Lulu (in 1923's Erdgeist ) long before Louise Brooks. Her best known film outside of Europe is Die Freudlose Gasse (1925) co-starring diva-to-be Greta Garbo. A compelling performer and artistic innovator, Nielsen's films deserve a worldwide audience.
