Extractions: This page is sponsored by: Ricardo Montalban Updated 4/6/2005. Dashing actor Ricardo Montalban was born Ricardo Gonzalo Pedro Montalban y Merino in Mexico City in November 1920. He spent a good part of his youth in the U.S., where he completed his education. His acting career began in the early 1940s on Broadway, usually in small roles; afterward, he started acting in films in his native Mexico, where he proved a sensation. A chance meeting with beautiful Georgiana Young, Loretta Young's sister, culminated in marriage in 1944. The couple has four children, and their lengthy marriage is certainly a rarity for Hollywood. In 1948, Montalban signed with MGM, becoming that studio's resident handsome Latin lover-type. Early on, MGM cast him in several Esther Williams aquacade films in mostly decorative roles. Longing to break free of the Latin lover mould, he was finally cast in Border Incident (1949), in which he did an excellent job and was allowed to exercise his dramatic range. In the 1950s, he continued to fight the Latin stereotype and branched out into more character roles. Montalban's contract with MGM lapsed after his appearance in the 1957 film Sayonara , in which he portrayed Nakamura, the Kabuki dancer; this was one of his better roles while at MGM and demonstrated his acting range. From the late 1950s into the 1960s, Montalban did a number of Broadway shows but returned to films in the early 1960s.

Extractions: Reflections: A Life in Two Worlds Before he could aspire to influence the image of Hispanics in Hollywood, Ricardo Montalbán had to get his image on the screen. And his first big break came in a "music video." Budget MTV visions out of your head. This kind of "video" didn't have 1,000 jump cuts, and you also had to put a coin in a nickelodeon machine in order to watch it. The film was called "Latin in Manhattan." Reflections: A Life in Two Worlds The worlds alluded to in the title evolve throughout this sentimental portrayal of Ricardo's existence before we knew he existed. First, there are the two worlds of his childhood: the Spain of his family's origin and the Mexico he was born in. When he is older, the two worlds become the California he moves to and the Mexico he grew up in. And finally, the two worlds are the world view inspired and instilled in him through his background, and the expansive and expensive world known as Hollywood. But the important lesson here is that this scene led to another role, then led to another and another. It was in Mexico that this student of acting would encounter the famous Japanese drama teacher, director and musician, Seki Sano, who trained with the great Konstantin Stanislavsky in the Moscow Theatre. Ricardo had a small role in "Hostages," a political film that Seki Sano was shooting in Mexico, but Ricardo insisted on becoming Seki Sano's student. This led to his learning from this craftsman as he performed in political plays side by side with laborers, railroad workers as well as internationally renowned actors.

Trek to Stardom Ricardo Montalbán From Stage to Screen Before "Fantasy Island," before "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan," and even before Corinthian leather, Ricardo Montalbán's career spanned more than five decades and constitutes a substantial body of work. Certainly few actors that are active today can look back at a career that includes having had early success during the heyday of MGM and the now legendary Studio system. He arrived in Los Angeles with absolutely no knowledge of the English language, and so was not admitted into Fairfax HighSchool. Ricardo, though disappointed because he had to attend Belmont High School, in downtown L.A., took it upon himself to learn English on his own. He studied for hours after school, and four months later he re-took the entrance exam and was admitted to the more academically challenging, Fairfax High School. On the advice of his Priest, Father Walsh Murray, Ricardo continued on the course of language improvement. The acting bug had bit hard, however, and when Ricardo found himself in New York, he couldn't help but audition for summer stock companies. He competed with hundreds of other acting hopefuls who came to New York for careers in the theater. Ricardo persisted, and his charm and talent would not go unnoticed for too long. After a season of doing minor parts in summer stock he auditioned for a role in "Her Cardboard Lover, "co-starring with Tallulah Bankhead. Ricardo landed the role, and played the part of the Latino lover in his debut performance. He gave it his all and received many fine notices for his portrayal. But it was just the beginning of something much bigger.
